What to buy? Arcana Unearthed or D&D Minis Entry pack

Being the sole provider of a family it is only on rare occasions that I get to increase my gaming collection. So, today on my lunch hour I'm gonna go run to a local store & purchase either Arcana Unearthed or The D&D Minis entry pack---what would you suggest?

Thanks :p

I can attest to Aracana Unearthed being a good read with lots of new and interesting ideas. I haven't seen the new minis though so I can't say which I'd prefer myself.

(Probably AU for I like to read more than I like to move plastic around.)

It kinda depends what you're interested in. AU is basically a new set of base classes and a new magic system, so for best value you'll want to use either or both in your game. IMHO it works best run on its own, combining it with the PH is doable but takes a time investment.

The minis won't add as much new stuff to your game, but if you're just looking for something to add on to an existing game they're not a bad idea. You might want to look around other mini displays and see if you like the D&D stuff best, no sense paying for the official D&D stamp on minis unless you like the look.

If you are in the middle of a D&D campaign, I'd say go with the minis. AU is really only usefull if you plan on starting a new campaign.

Do you like core D&D, and see no reason to change? If yes, then buy the mini's, or even better some Fiery Dragon Counter Collection (under $20 for hundreds of counters of all types, exactly sized for a battlemat).

If you wish to buy AU for totally different campaign setting and different take on classes, races, feats, and spells, then go for it. If, on the other hand, you wanted AU just to steal the occasional spell or class from it, I don't think it may work well for you. AU is a GREAT game, but it is far better off taken whole cloth than piecemeal, in my opinion.

Any more info on the appeal of each purchase to you? We might be able to help you better.

What Henry said? What do you want them for? I found a great female hawk totem warrior mini for my wife's half-elf ranger in our 3.# shared world game. I get to use it double duty with my AU group. :) And the sprytes are keen. I've never seen such tiny stuff be so cool. (They are easy to knock over, but still.)

If you mainly want something for use as a DM, that's a determining factor too. Either way though, I do recommend getting AU! (But I'm biased. ;) )
