I think with floating ASIs the net effect over all will be a wash.

On one hand, you will have people playing new races because they can put the ASI's where the want them.
On the other hand, you will have players sticking to a few races because they don't need to expand their selection to put the ASIs where they want them.

I can see it going both ways but I don't really envision a landslide type of shift in either direction.

Yeah, I'm totally fine just getting rid of them completely. But for people who really want "this one to go to 11" it might make them feel better to add that +2.

And then there is literally no reason to do it! It would merely worsen the verisimilitude for nothing.
As someone pointed out earlier, the concept of floating ASI is really equivalent to the idea of bumping point-buy and standard array. We would just have to find a way to bump rolling a bit, and there you go...

Easier to just add the floating ASI’s as they affect both point buy and rolling.

For my next campaign, I think I'm going with a 25 point buy and let them pick a talent from the book of talents, which are like half feats. In addition, I'm going to remove most of the level restrictions, as I don't think it will greatly break anything. There are around 200 options by using the talents, and many of them can be character defining right from 1st level.

OH! I forgot about my 2E wemic! I love wemics and miss him... :( We need wemics back in 5E!!! :D
I'm going to run Margreve, and no wemic but they have alseid. Although wemic would fit perfectly into this setting too
