Hah! Great idea!
The first monster I ever slew in a D&D game (well, it was actually an AD&D ... 2nd? Edition game) was a wolf.
I killed it with a mighty blow of my hand-axe, right between the eyes.
The DM described, in impressive detail, the effects of my first D&D combat - including an award of 10xp! So, naturally, I asked whether or not we got any gold for defeating our enemies.
Keep in mind that, up until that point, my only experience with roleplaying games was on Nintendo, and in both Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior you certainly got XP
and gold for defeating wolves. Why wouldn't you in D&D, as well?
Well, once the rest of the group stopped laughing ("I mean, seriously, where would he keep it? Under his tongue?"), explanations were given, and the game proceeded apace.
I never used my potion of Cure Light Wounds during that session, however - I kept waiting to be inflicted with Light wounds (as opposed to, say, Dark wounds, or Axe wounds, or Fire wounds, etc.).
Yeah, I thought Light was an energy type.
