Assuming 1,000,000 -- that's one million -- gamers made this open-ended d10 roll five times a week for 20 years -- each -- the odds of getting 30 10s in a row are still 192,307,692,307,690,000,000 to 1 ... against.Temprus said:I did 303 with an Arquebus in 2e. 30 0s in a row, mighty freaky it was. Damn, the topic's about damage? Well, it's kinda on-topic....
It's a mano-a-mano tournament, and my Red Wizard-hating Barbarian steps in the ring when a Red Wiz climbs in. He gets initiative, would have killed me with Tasha's Hideous Laughter and a summoned Dire Weasel. I roll a 17 for save, making it something like a 22.
Rage.
Charge.
Full Power Attack.
Natural 20.
Natural 18 to confirm.
Greataxe is triple damage.
Let's see... carry the one... um...
89 points of damage to a sixth level Wizard.
The DM described it as: "He panics and holds out his hand as if to block the axe. It chops through the hand, his upper arm, ribs, spine, other ribs, and exits cleanly, taking the fingertips off his other hand. He looks up at you in shock for a split second, then collapses in a gory splash."
Yeah. That was MY HOUSE!!
Of course, two sessions later, I rolled three ones in a row, and two ones in a row twice. And nothing over a 16 in an epic, half-party-wipeout.

My new 8th level archer PC was having a hard time getting the other PCs to accept him as a useful addition to their group and I felt I had to impress them a little. So I asked one of them to take an apple, run 600 ft. away and throw the apple into the air.
After the apple left his hand, I drew my bow (had the Quick Draw feat! ) and shot three arrows (using Rapid Shot) through the apple before it hit the ground. My three attack rolls were 19, 20, 20.
I was using Rapid Shot to increase my chances of hitting at least once; I never thought all 3 arrows would hit! My archer got a lot more respect after that.
Unfortunately he died in his very first combat encounter!
Failed his save against a basilisk's gaze and then failed his save when an NPC cast Stone to Flesh on him.

The DM was so surprised he forgot to make it explode.
Warmage are great.
Which is an mean of 3.244, a below average roll. Imagine how surprised your DM would have been if you'd rolled well

One of my players was an archer. After a very easy encounter, one of the enemy hobgoblins ran away over a hilltop, out of sight.
"I want to shoot that hobgoblin."
"He's out of sight"
"I don't care. What do I need to roll?"
"Well, start with a 10% chance that you target the right square"
*Rolls 10%*
"*chuckle* Alright, you still have a 50% miss chance because of full concealment"
*rolls, makes it*
"Well, with the distance, wind, and odd trajectory (arch), you still have a -10."
*rolls 20, cheers around the table*
"Well let's see you confirm that, don't we? I think that goblin should be able to run away with one meager arr..."
*rolls another 20, starts rolling very good damage, similing at me demeaningly*
*I blink a few times* "You climb up the hilltop to see whether your arrow connected. You spot a dead Hobgoblin, with an arrow near vertically in its skull, coming out of its lower jaw. It is in post-death spasms."
Then the party statistician starts thinking about the odds... then he starts thinking about how his new character would think of this archer after this feat!

Well, on damage isues, I got this house full of MM orcs and a party of 2nd lvel pcs was cornering them, one of the rogues (there were two) decided to check the window open at the second floor, he threw his rope, went up.
To make sure nothing was ready to get him, he passed a dagger in front of the window, i though "damn bad archer in there, he reacts and hits on a 20 only", I roll the die and... hit.
In disbelief the rogue throws the dagger with an arrow attached to its pummel inside the window and gets another one. again I decide the orc can hit only on a 20... and he hits!
The players were all in disbelief, the one of the rogue said that phrase: "It is an orc, of course he has roled 2 20s, he can't do that again." And so, he peeks through the window, I roll a dice and it comes another 20, the critical confirmed, we did not use instant kils at that game.
Result is a description of him peking and slowly seeing the orc and a bow, ending up in an arrow aligned perfectly with his eye and the orc's, a shot and a hit that dropped him to around -8.
Man, if I was then like I am now, that orc would have gained around 3 fighter levels for an archer npc....

Best roll I ever made...
Second edition, I had a Elf Thief who fought with a katana (don't ask). I managed to sneak up on an ettin and whacked it with a critical backstab. For max damage on d12 x 4. Took the sucker down. Not single-handedly, but everyone just pictured a huge hole appearing in the ettin's lower torso. The official sound effect for mage hits like that officially became *GUTCH!* that day.

A player in the game I'm currently playing has a human rogue. Now, we have a house rule that if you manage to roll 3 consecutive 20s during your attack roll, it's an instant kill. That's happened only once, and it happened when it mattered. She took down a Death Slaad with a single arrow.

my dwarven psi-war critted with is dwarven waraxe ... with str bonus I got 36 dmg at 3rd level.
sure the DM said it was a skeleton and that it was immune to crits, but I was rolling so poorley through this session that I rolled the dice anyway ... even if they didn't matter.
my best stats were 4d6 arrange in any order.
18, 17, 17, 16, 14, 14 ... that was back in 1e days, those scores morphed into an Elven Fighter ... the UA came along and he became a Bow Specialist ... very cool.
