Pfft. Just another holding device.

Hand of Vecna another holding device ... :)

I like that coconut from GURPS. Instant Oasis. Throw it into the desert and it'll unfold itself into a full score oasis... With nice dancers, if you are lucky!

In my group, no adventurer is considered complete until he or she has two items:

1.Heward's haversack
2.Boots of Striding and springing

For a halfling or gnome, a H.H.H. is a Godsend; it weighs 5 pounds, and holds 100 combined pounds of gear. AND, it is like wearing an item that gives you the equivalent of quickdraw on anything in the sack! Many is the time I have impressed my group by my halfling acting like a general store:

You need fishhooks?
Ink?
Ink Pen?
Flasks of Acid?
Oil?
Potions of curing/haste/jumping/spider climbing?
crowbar?
Chess and draughts sets?
Deck of cards for gambling?
Bedroll, blanket, and small tent?

It's all here, baby! :D

Basically if it was on the items for sale lists, was low weight, and cost under 50 gp, I had it. I even carried one extra holy symbol of every party member's god! (I got that idea from that wonderful scene in The Mummy with Brendan Fraser!)

The Boots of S&S, or "The BoSS" as we sometimes called them, were almost as useful. If the only thing they offered was double movement, I would STILL pay a 6,000 gp price tag. For a halfling, a 40 speed is incalculably useful. As one player put it when he first saw my character move 40 feet and shoot, "You are one fast little man." :)

Ring of X-Ray vision
if it was late at night you can see clearly for 20 feet
in a forest full of trees you can see your close range enemies
in close quartered combat with misc. walls or large stones/rocks, you can see through them

Robe of Useful Items. The most non-combat, multi-usage item there is. Light source (bullseye lantern, filled and lit), pole and rope are always useful here or there. There are some cases when you might want a 2-foot by 4-foot steel mirror, but wouldn't that be a pain to carry around? A few valuables, in case your money bag is missing. A 24-foot long ladder! A mule! A pit! A rowboat! A self-hinging door! A self-embedding window! War dogs! These are things that you just can't carry around, not even in a bag or holding. Sure, you might never have occasion to use one of these, but someday you'll be kicking yourself because you don't have a rowboat.

I even carried one extra holy symbol of every party member's god!

You some kind of Peddler ?! Hope the Clerics in your group werent too offended ... :)

We had a halfling too who carried a lot of holysymbols... but it was only for his disguising... he didnt much care for religion... he even carried some evil ones just in case !

Travel Cloak from Magic of Faerun

2000gp for endure elements cold, keeps you dry, makes rations for 3 people per day, 2 gallons of water(or tea) per day, and becomes a one person tent!
Huh huh. Orco42's pitching a tent in his cloak. Huh huh.

My vote's for that Ring of Sustenance... no need to carry food or water, only need 1/4th as much sleep... especially useful for spell casters.
