In my group, no adventurer is considered complete until he or she has two items:
1.Heward's haversack
2.Boots of Striding and springing
For a halfling or gnome, a H.H.H. is a Godsend; it weighs 5 pounds, and holds 100 combined pounds of gear. AND, it is like wearing an item that gives you the equivalent of quickdraw on anything in the sack! Many is the time I have impressed my group by my halfling acting like a general store:
You need fishhooks?
Ink?
Ink Pen?
Flasks of Acid?
Oil?
Potions of curing/haste/jumping/spider climbing?
crowbar?
Chess and draughts sets?
Deck of cards for gambling?
Bedroll, blanket, and small tent?
It's all here, baby!
Basically if it was on the items for sale lists, was low weight, and cost under 50 gp, I had it. I even carried one extra holy symbol of every party member's god! (I got that idea from that wonderful scene in
The Mummy with Brendan Fraser!)
The Boots of S&S, or "The BoSS" as we sometimes called them, were almost as useful. If the only thing they offered was double movement, I would STILL pay a 6,000 gp price tag. For a halfling, a 40 speed is incalculably useful. As one player put it when he first saw my character move 40 feet and shoot, "You are one
fast little man."
