What's the scoop on pregen characters for Worldwide Game Day 2008?

Tpk

I've read through the adventure and I seriously don't believe the PCs can survive the last two encounters! They seem way too hard for first level characters. I hope I'm pleasantly surprised, but I have strong doubts. I'd say more, but I don't want to include spoilers...

I am not certain if this is actually an error, but on page 3 where it mentions if A Certain Creature in Encounter #2 is required to make an unexpected Insight Check, you'd use it's total Wisdom Check modifier (the second number in parenthesis after it's Wisdom score). But shouldn't you add half of it's level to that score for the total modifier?

Just checkin'!

TGryph
No, since it standard notation to include half level in those total Check modifiers. Look at the stats for that Certain Creature. It has "Wis 14 (+3)". Half level already included, right?

ok so its my first year doing anything D&D related, so I don't know if this is standard procedure.
But four letter word beginning with F.

I wanted to make my own character for game day. I wanted to use the new rules, my ideas for a character, and my desires for customization. After the 4e demo and KotS pregens, we are once again forced to use premade characters? Especially on WotC's big day (or the day after, whatever)?

This blows chunks. hard!

(unless we CAN make our own, and the pregens are just for convenience sake. Then nvmd.)

Using pregens is standard for gameday adventures - it actually makes MORE sense now than before because it is a new edition and the books aren't being released until that morning. So, really, it streamlines less time people sitting around trying to make their own characters and learning rules to just dropping in, getting a brief primer, and playing the adventure.

It's a one shot deal, no need to waste your character concept on this, save it for a campaign when you get a group that you'll get to see the character actually advance in level.

So far, between KotS and this adventure, they are pretty darn tough encounter-wise. It's pretty funny how much people bitched that 4E PCs would be impossible to kill and now complain that all the encounters are too tough.

It's pretty tough, but it's also a one-off, so it's not too big a deal if you die.

Hmmm... was looking at the character sheets and found some glaring errors. The wizard lists stealth as a training feat, but doesn't have stealth at all in her skill list, and the rogue's powers look crappy because as listed on the sheet they are strength based, when they are dex based in all the info I have. So all his to hits ought to be 2 higher than they are as far as I can tell.

Speaking of wizard skills - she also has Nature calculated as if it was based on Int, but it's actually based on Wis.

It's still a one-off adventure - having pregens means the DM doesn't have to check over every character sheet to check that it's been done correctly. This would be hard to do, being as most of the volunteer DM's won't have seen the books for more than 24 hours.

Go with the pregens and don't worry about it - you can play your preferred character when you're in a full campaign.
