What's the scoop on pregen characters for Worldwide Game Day 2008?

I playtested this yesterday. I ran some of the judges for our Gameday through the adventure. It is a fun and tough adventure. If you complete it successfully and there is enough time you can do some bonus stuff.

There is a pretty good reason why it uses pregens. You can never anticipate what people will bring to the table. A table full of one type of class will never finish the adventure.

As a showcase for 4e, I think it works pretty well. I'm going to be combining this with Keep on the Shadowfell to start off my 4e campaign.

It's still a one-off adventure - having pregens means the DM doesn't have to check over every character sheet to check that it's been done correctly. This would be hard to do, being as most of the volunteer DM's won't have seen the books for more than 24 hours.

Go with the pregens and don't worry about it - you can play your preferred character when you're in a full campaign.

Oh, I know that. I never suggested that anyone shouldn't use pregens. I was only pointing out that the books are released the day before game day. And I'm sure that was done on purpose so that people would have a chance to look over the rules.

No, since it standard notation to include half level in those total Check modifiers. Look at the stats for that Certain Creature. It has "Wis 14 (+3)". Half level already included, right?

Ah! Correct Sir! Thank you!

I'm new to running the 'official stuff', but I'm giving it a go at my FLGS this Saturday. I have a question about what's acceptable. For some variety, would it be cool to replace one of the characters, maybe one of the duplicate fighters with the Tiefling Warlord that Wizards released a few weeks ago?

I know there are certain scenarios to be concerned about.

Like the two statues, where maybe two tanks is a good thing.

Looking for insight from our cool game store owners, as well as opinions on if this is a good idea or not.

Keep in mind that the kit includes repainted figs for the 5 characters provided, so someone's fig won't match.

My FLGS (who signed up for this) hasn't received his Game Day stuff yet. He's a little miffed about it. It's up to me to save the day he said, so I'll be running the Kobold Lair adventure in the back of the DMG. Not only do I have to prep the adventure for a one-shot game on Saturday, I've got to prep enough for three tables. I also need to generate my OWN pregens--I'm going to make one of every class, spanning every race combination.

It's a good thing I took Friday off, isn't it? :D

Oh, and by the way, the adventure in the back of the DMG is a great one-shot or campaign kickoff if you can't (or didn't get) the GameDay adventure! I ran it for four people (fighter, warlord, rogue, ranger) and actually forgot to scale it down--they still completed it, with no casualties. Though that 875 xp encounter was a doozy!
