What's with the hat for PayPal?

I was going to ask this in Asmo's thread in General, but thought better of it and will ask here.

Why do people hate PayPal so much? And I'm just referring to using them to make a credit card payment. I've done it a bunch and never had a single problem.

Just curious. And bored. And it's Friday...

Heh. might want to edit your title. I came into this thread thinking there was a hat placed on top of the paypal logo on the paypal site.

Not sure why people hate paypal. Probably just afraid of their credit card info being stolen and used.

Paypal is not a bank and with the agreements you have to agree to it basically says they can close your account and make it very hard for you to get your money for little to know reason. Also, if you use paypal and jhave problems of any sort I have heard of very few people who actually get any help. Usually, months go by with little or no reasponse and the person just takes a loss. Morrus had huge problems with Paypal a bit over a year ago, and there was a thread on some of the bad things that can and do happen.

I don't use it, I don't think its worth the risk. I did use it and had zero problems before, but once I learned a little about them it was easy to see how risky they truely are.

But like Crothian said, Paypal is in essence a non-FDIC licensed bank. There's a reason that banks are regulated (at least in the US) and Paypal is a prime example of why.

Also, unless you're moving lots of money through the account, they won't take notice. After all, they need to keep up their good image, and the real money is in closing down the accounts with lots in it. Little accounts like most people have won't get targetted.

Interesting. I've never used them as a bank (i.e. has a balance in my account) so maybe that's it. I just have an account with a credit card on file so I can make purchases. Seems as secure to me as giving my card to any other online shop.

But I suppose anything online is fine until you get burned.

I was burned pretty badly by them to the tune of about $2000. I got it back eventually, but it took me several months and a lot of hard work. I won't use them now.

I've only lost $50 to paypal so far. Thus my hate.

BUT... With the switch to new management, I'm giving paypal a second chance. This helps in two ways - it allows me to pay people from ENPublishing using paypal, AND it lets me participate in ebay auctions again (a lot of auctions are paypal only now).

What worries me is that paypal can and has taken money directly from a person's bank account (or so I've heard). But I think it only happens to sellers, to recoup "suspicious activity" (read: someone complained, and we took the chance to seize more money from you).

But they'll also do it, I think, if you get your credit card to reverse one of your charges to PayPal... Which is what scares me, because PayPal doesn't offer much safety even when you have a credit card...

Anyway, I use them to pay bills and the occasional auction. But my last few bills are becoming available through their own websites, so that's trailing off, too.
