What's your favorite video game?

Heroes of M&M 3, Disciples 2, Civ 2, and Galactic Civilization for the turn based strategy.

Kohan 1 (stay away from 2) and Warcraft 3 for the real time.

Anyone looking forward to Dragonshard? The building system and flat tech tree sound interesting, but I'm getting a Kohan 2 feel from the interface and (perhaps overly) streamlined micro.

Jade Empire is OK, but certainly not great. I would go into it with measured expectations if you have 'gamist' preferences.

Halo 2 is MUCH better following the release of the 1.1 update. Comes much closer to the original. It still has the 'smooth' physics, but the underlying balance promotes a greater degree of skill and stealth, especially on large maps.

Oh, and I just read a preview of X-Men Legends 2. The didn't go for the original, because the reviews made it sound pretty simplistic. But the sequal seems to be beefing up both the twitch play and rp aspects, as well smoothing out the multiplayer. Might be a good Gauntlet clone.

:D My favorites and the proudest moment...are Grandia, the Japanese verison and Dragon Force 2, again the japanese verison. Both finished, without the aid of any instructions from any sources, what so ever. Both played on the Sega Saturn.:D At the end of Grandia...I was in tears. 86 hours of game time. My personal best and longest record for any game.:)

Ah well, i wished there was a update for the xBox, wishful thinking....

If you like God of War you should really check out Devil May Cry III, just because they're two of the best action games ever. Very similar. I liked DMC III better though 'cause it's more difficult, and hence my type of game. :)

Got it waiting in the wings ready to make up for the mess that was DMC II...

;)

By far my favorite video game is Chrono Trigger. It's the only game I can still pick up today and have as much fun if not more fun with than a game I bought yesterday.

SMS - Phantasy Star
NES - Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Brothers 2
Gameboy - Tetris
SNES - Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy II, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, SimCity
Genesis - Phantasy Star II, Tommy LaSorda Baseball, Populous
Arcade: Street Fighter 2
Playstation - Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII, Resident Evil, Tekken 2
N64 - Mario Kart 64
Dreamcast - Skies of Arcadia, NFL2K, Resident Evil: Code Veronica
Playstation 2 - Madden 2002, Final Fantasy X, NBA Street
Xbox - Knights of the Old Republic
Gamecube - Super Smash Bros.
PC - Space Quest Series, CivII, Rollercoaster Tycoon

OK, these aren't exactly cutting edge. And this isn't because I am not on the cutting edge of gaming, but rather because I think the cutting edge is pretty much crap for the most part. Even those shining gems don't add up to some older games. That said.

My favorite game of all time, one which I was absolutely awed with when I first played it, and continue to be impressed with every time I play it or even think about it (me and some of my friends actually will trade old war stories about the game): Castelvania Symphony of the Night (PSX). If you haven't played it, do so. It plays a lot like the metroid series but faster paced and prettier.

The game (actually two nearly identical games of different names) I have actually logged the most hours in (therefore the best bang for my buck) has been Tetris Attack (SNES)/Pokemon Puzzle League (N64). Only reason I keep my N64 around is because they haven't made a new one for GameCube.

If you enjoy real time strategy, skip the hype (read: Warcraft) and play Age of Mythology.

RTS: Age of Mythology. Warcraft 3 is a great game too - really polished, fast paced. A solid Blizz production and really a pretty different game from Age style play. Having said that... You just can beat the 4th Age god powers of Age of Mythology - one of the most satisfying experiences I've had in RTS play is dropping a meteor on my enemy's town/army. Happy fun time. Of course, Age of Kings: The Conquerors is probably my all time favorite RTS.

Adventure: Grim Fandango. No competition, but I have a soft spot in my heart for Sierra's many _____ Quest games - especially King's Quest III. :)

RPG: Planescape: Torment - best rpg story EVER. Love it. If you haven't played it and you like D&D rpgs (and can handle the graphics, they're dated now) don't miss this one. Second runner up - Sentinel Worlds I: Future Magic. Sadly, there was never a SWII.

Turn-Based-Strategy: Props to Sid Meier and CivII, but for me this category goes to X-Com. Holy smokes this game is fun. Again, now-dated graphics but SUPER gameplay. Just awesome. Plus you get to name your ground-team squad members... and there's nothing like sending Jimmy McJim XXVII into yet another blind-siding alien attack. Brilliant game.

All time favorite game: Sid Meier's PIRATES! I'm waiting for the Xbox release of the update to this game, but the game I'm talking about here is the old-school 80's release. Brilliant game. Really, really fun without beating you over the head with the nastier elements of colonization and piracy in the Carribean.

Let me put in another vote for X-Com. It WILL make you sweat as your painstakingly recruited, expensively equiped and difficult to replace troopers go up against the alien menace. Loosing a man HURTS in this game, but it's worth it for the first time you capture an alien battle ship or manage to gun down that chest burster just short of your guy.
