What's your favorite video game?

My favorite game of all time, one which I was absolutely awed with when I first played it, and continue to be impressed with every time I play it or even think about it (me and some of my friends actually will trade old war stories about the game): Castelvania Symphony of the Night (PSX). If you haven't played it, do so. It plays a lot like the metroid series but faster paced and prettier.

Oof, that shoulda been mine! Yeah, SotN is right up there next to CT as far as awesomeness. Good call.

I share a fair number of the ones already mentioned (FF 3/6 especially, but there are a few old favorites for the SNES I get to mention first:

Earthbound: I love this game. With quirky mechanics (roll-down hp meter, the ability to order a time-delayed Pizza of Healing before setting out to the dungeon) and an even quirkier plot ("Please, will you sign my banana? I need it so the museum curator will let me into the sewers to fight a Rat of Timeless Evil." And who can forget the Pencil Eraser? And the improved version, the Eraser Eraser?) this game was one of the most memorable RPGs ever. I lent it to a friend and for a while afterwards we got into the habit of confusing our other friends by reminiscing about Major Psychic Psychos and Happy-Happyists. Any game that forces you into a deadly duel with the Unassuming Local Guy is classic.

Secret of Mana: I almost bought the old SNES 4-person converter thingy for this. Boss battles tended to be too easy unless you were careful about limiting your magic use, but the plot was solid, the weapons were fun (especially the boomerang tree and the glove tree), and this is the only game I didn't really mind leveling up in. Great stuff, especially for being in the ChronoTrigger genre. I also liked Secret of Evermore. Loved the dog, loved the alchemy, loved the characters. Drops a rank behind Secret of Mana because of some annoying labyrinths (a hedge maze, looping palace, and confusing space station all in one game? Aargh!) and because I was never able to beat it due to an annoying glitch.

I had the same damn experience. Evermore was a really good game but near the end it started to lose it. And the game-ending glitch sealed it. Too bad as I liked those kind of RPG-Action games. :(

Master of Orion II - One of the great time gobblers I have ever found (old game)
Ever play the first one? While I played the hell out of MOO2, I actually liked the original better, with its abstract planet improvement, and the single-best idea for a 4X game with a technology tree; not all techs are present in every game. I wish more games were designed like that.

Yeah, the original was a great game as well. Since you captured planets by shipping population there, I found that late in the game you could simply send huge numbers of population to an enemy planet and could usually capture them without even using any ships.

Being subject of a recent temporary layoff (YAY!) I've got some free time on my hands, so I figure I'll try out some new games. What better way to find a game than to ask your peers? So what is it, and why?

All time Ultima 6 or Ultima 7.

If you're looking for more current games I'd suggest God of War, it's an action game and should be right up your alley and conviently is for a system you obviously have.

I'm curretnly having trouble deiding between Half-life 2 and Knights of the Old Republic.

I think the best game I ever played was Ultima 6. It's just the best game every made, IMO.

A man after my own heart.

If you like God of War you should really check out Devil May Cry III, just because they're two of the best action games ever. Very similar. I liked DMC III better though 'cause it's more difficult, and hence my type of game. :)

Have you tried God mode?

I'm a bit of an old school Japanese 2-D fighting game fan. Well, "a bit of one" is not accurate at all; I'm a junkie for them. My favorite games are Street Fighter Alpha 3,

Where would you rank SF3?

Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves

When I pick up my xbox, hopefully in the very near term, I want more of the same; Capcom vs. SNK 2, SNK vs. Capcom: Chaos and the imminent release of King of Fighters 02/03 this summer.

Don't forget SF Anniversary Edition (it's a Vampire Chronicles style 'compilation of the SF2 series), which also comes with SF3 Third Strike.

RPG: Planescape: Torment - best rpg story EVER.

Ummm, no. I really liked the game, but again, no.

I will back you up on X-COM though.

j/c, What would you rate as the best rpg story?

thanks,

X-COM is hands down my favorite game of all time. I loved the tacticle feel at squad level, the personal stats of the squad members and the ability to name them gave you an attachment to each one. I wish they would come out with a new version of this older game or one similar to it .

I'm playing Pirates by Sid Meier and Atari. I love it.

One of my all time favorite games that was back in the IBM 386 days is a roleplaying game computer version.

It was Traveler. It had a sequel also. Did anyone else play that game or at least remember it?

I loved that game, and Roadwar 3000
