At what point is a class so weak mechanically that you pack it in and play something else?

What would keep you playing a class that turned out to be much worse than you anticipated?

What would make you intentionally pick a class you know is weak?

PS

1) When everyone in a party does what I do better. (High level 2e thief)
2) Roleplaying hooks mostly, but also unique ways to help.
3) Flavor (3e bard)

To expound a little more, my favorite character was a wizard with poor stats across the board. The only reason he was worth playing was because I developed a neat hook for him as an "investigator." Took some esoteric feats and grabbed some very specialized spells and suddenly he was a cool idea, albeit weak in the mechanical sense.

The 3e bard had some effects that could be useful, but the "master of none" problem generally drove my players away.
