If I hear another plaintive cry of "Oh, ze core books are so expensive!" I will probably mutter something sour and post a criticism.

Do the mathematics...

As a matter of fact, I don't care at all about the cost. The longer it takes before 4e, the more books will be published for 3e and so more money goes with them, and once 4e starts we'll want 4e books more than 3e...

What I care about is instead

1) the great effort it has taken to me to learn how to play 3e half-correctly is going to be reset by 4e

2) if 4e comes too soon, only a small % of the books I bought for 3e will be used by then

I think WOTC is running out of steam. The release schedule looks to be stretching thin. Keep in mind that Hasbro has a completely different mindset to TSR. I suspect that Hasbro will not be content with slowing sales and will look to a mid 2006 revision as a much needed boost to their revenue. 3.5 is a prime example of a revision to boost sales. It's hasty release left many sceptical including me.

Here's hoping they put together a great "Red Box" soon to get the game growing again.

You think? I think the release schedule is looking fairly packed, especially with the minis (7,000,000 sold?!?!?) and Eberron. If Eberron does well, I suspect it'll hold off the advent of 4e.

It was interesting looking at the Campaign Classics issue of dragon last year and seeing the way te old designers talked about how the suitsa were always looking for 'the next dragonlance'. I'm wondering if that's what's going on with eberron too.

You left off the poll choice for me: "I don't care."

I've invested so much money in D20 that I won't be switching. My collection takes up about 12 running feet of shelf space, and that's after weeding out about 40 books I didn't want. And I buy 5 or 6 books each month, so it won't stop growing any time soon.

No, I won't be buying 4E, whenever it comes out.

With blind optimism, I voted 2011

1st ed PH printed 1978
...wilderness survival guide, 1986 = 1.5
2nd ed PH printed 1989
...skills and powers, 1995 = 2.5
3rd ed PH printed 2000
...3.5, 2003
4th ed printed 2011

Wilderness survival guide introduced non weapon profs.which then became one of the fundamental changes for 2nd ed. Skills and powers just sucked was did anyone actually use them? I only bought the books at an auction(10$ for 3 books) - after 3rd was released. But it did set up feat like flexiblity for the system.

so each previous revison stayed on the market for 3-8 years,

I think we will see a ruleshift in a supplement first - then the new edition.

I agree.

When I said "3e Renaissance", I really meant the 3.5e Renaissance. The business plan outlined by Wizards at GAMA earlier this year is far more extensive than I've seen before, and certainly more extensive than what was apparent for the first 3 years of 3E.

Future of D&D

Cheers!
