Where are the angels?

Skalekan

First Post
We have lots of monsters and enemies, devil and demons, celestial creatures etc. etc.

But where are the real angels in D&D? You know, the white ones with wings and shining with light.

I know the mythology and religions are different with avatars and aspects so angels do not fit in everywhere, but angels should be useful in some campaign.

I just can't find them in any of the books. What is wrong with me?

What's wrong with Planetars, Solars and Devas? There are also some lower level angels like the Protectar from the Miniature's Handbook.

There is also the fabulous Anger of Angels by Sean K Reynolds.
Absolutely. Great stuff, if you're looking for Angels straight out of real world religions, d20-ified.

Doesn't scale well with D&D, but then I get the distinct impression it's not meant to. It's fairly much an all-in-one package. And a mighty fine one, at that.

Well, thanks for the quick answer. Just goes to show I should have looked more careful.
no apology necessary. TSR created Planetars, et al in order to try to appear they were not evoking the Myth cycle of Judaism, Christianity or Islam. Another example of excessive Political Correctness. And yet they appropriate their bad guys (i.e. demons and devils). The irony there is almost every major Devil or Demon is itself an appropriation of a Near Eastern tribal deity. 'Course sometimes the Christians would appropriate a local deity and make s/he into a Saint or something else. Thus, the devil has horns like Pan, or might appear more wild like the Celtic Great Hunt God, or might be as harmless as Santa Claus, who originally was none other than Thor, except Thor or Thror's sleigh was pulled by magic goats. I read somewhere that there was a local deity near Persia named Shaitan, btw.

If you are looking for something more derived from real world angel lore than D&D, Atlas Games' Penumbra Fantasy Bestiary has an angel listing with traditional creatures like thrones, principalities, cherubim, etc.

If you can locate it, The Avatar's Handbook is worth picking up. Like yourself I wanted the good guys and this book has them in spades (just ignore the Avatar base class)..

I think you are mish-mashing the eras in TSR history. Planetars and Solar were created in 1e, BEFORE the politically paranoid TSR of the early 2e era.
