Which D&D Settings Do You Play In?

Over on the right of the news page is a new poll which asks which D&D setting you currently play in. Obviously WotC has its own survey data, and we know from that that 55% of people use home-brew settings, 35% play in the Realms, 5% in Greyhawk, and the remaining 5% is divided between the rest. I figured it would be fun to see how closely EN World's members track to that overall survey; how closely to we represent the official data? To that end, I've listed a number of settings. The question is what you PLAY in? It's not "what would you LIKE to play in", or "what would you like to see more support for?" -- it's what are you PLAYING in right now? I know some folks have more than one game going and they may be different settings. That's why I've allowed a choice of three in the poll. If you have four or more games in multiple settings -- well, I'm envious. I took the list from the Wikipedia page of 25 settings, so if you're mad and incensed about the list or its ordering or whatever (because Internet) blame Wikipedia! Some settings incorporate others (Kara-Tur is in the Realms, for example), but I"m keeping it simple with the top level list.

Here's what WotC's survey says we play (that data comes from Chris Perkin's panel at Gamehole Con). Let's see how closely we match it. The survey is on the right hand side of the news page, or it's at the top of the discussion thread, depending where/how you're viewing this.

The Ravenloft results may also be skewed since it's not long after Halloween. I just ran my homebrew group through 3 weeks of Ravenloft as a halloween special, but now we're back to the regular adventure. I'm sure Ravenloft is popular as it's a great setting, but would we be seeing it similarly represented in February?

Or, who knows, maybe people likes horror and enjoy the gothic millieu. ;) Besides, RL is kinda half-homebrew in a lot of cases with the unstable universe actively encouraging that.

I suppose that's possible. I like Ravenloft back in the day, and still use elements of it in my campaign.

I'd place it alongside the likes of Dark Sun and Ebberon as far as popularity goes. It brings something specific to the game.

I'm running a Spelljammer game that starts in Greyhawk but it's really "homebrew." Why? Because in order to do anything other than Forgotten Realms or to modify FR is to "homebrew." We really don't have a choice.

One thing I have found..as I have aged, I tend to prefer "outside the norm" when it comes to official D&D settings. Eberron, Dark Sun, Ravenloft, etc. if I am doing "traditional-esque" D&D these days, I tend to homebrew/mishmash like I mentioned previously, use a skeleton like the Nentir Vale or The WIlderlands, or just come up with some names and make :):):):):) up on the spot. I have been really enjoying some old Ravenloft products recently too.

15 years ago +, it was quite the opposite. I much preferred my OGB and select other FR books, or TAB/PG/Folio/FTA for GH, etc.

Wow, most people play in forgotten realms (other than homebrew)? It's almost like they put out material for Forgotten Realms, then people play in Forgotten Realms (because they have current supported material), so they ask what campaigns they play in. When people answer "Forgotten Realms" they produce more Forgotten Realms material! It's one of those self fulfilling prophecies.

Reading the comments, I wonder, how much people plays in Golarion with 5E? I would not be surprised if that would be the 2nd most played. Tons of material, supported continualy. I'm myself seriously considering right now a Golarion campaign, because, while I like FR, Paizo did a great work with that setting. Best all-in trope buying I know, even greater kitchen sink than FR and yet, somehow makes sense. :) The hiring of excelent authors to write stories also helped.

Missing option in poll: Hollow World (not even noted as an extension of Mystara)

Also missing: Known World (which should be noted as an alternate name for Mystara)

Currently playing in: a version of Mystara/Known World (originally based on the centrefold map in Isle of Dread) so completely redone as to best now be considered homebrew.
Currently DMing: full homebrew.
