Here's a look at the full art pieces for the covers of Mythic Odysseys of Theros. The first is the regular, and the second is the alternate cover. Which is better?
Alternate would make a better cover IMHO. The original strikes me more as interior art for some reason. The alternate cover for Eberron was a no brainer for me. It evoked the setting far more than the regular cover. But with this one I like regular more. The alternate cover seems kinda weird.
I bought a book a while ago and the worker asked if I wanted the special edition because it was at the same price, I said no for the same reason, I need them to match! This is the first time I actually like an alternate cover. (That said, my desire to have matching spines on my bookshelf means I will only purchase the regular cover version.)
I'm not sure they are. It looks like it is showing a hydra in the foreground and the gods are simply there in heavens in the background. Looking closer at it, it looks more like the gods are bearing witness to the hero fighting the hydra in the alternate cover. The alternate one would make a killer van paint for sure but... why are the gods fighting a hydra with glowing eyes? I guess it makes sense if you play Magic?
Dammit, I can't unsee that now.The standard cover looks like it’s composed of four or five different photoshop layers that don’t quite work together. The hero seems to be throwing his spear at something in the tree, and the hydra seems to suffer from the same ailment that makes my senior dog wipe out if she takes a corner too quickly. Lovely work otherwise.
