Which is REALLY the best alignment?

What's the best alignment to be?

One of the things I thought was clever in the 3E PHB was that each alignment was described from the point of view of someone of that alignment, who described it as the best or most impressive point of view.

But come on, no one (who doesn't need immediate attention from medical and possibly police officials) really believes that Chaotic Evil is the BEST alignment to be.

But if that's the case -- and maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think so -- surely ENWorld could come to a consensus on which alignments are really the best ones to be.

The best alignment to be, for yourself, is probably NG, CG, or N (I voted NG); the best alignment for everyone else to have is probably LG...

Neutral good for one basic reason, being heroic, which D&D is all about, is best for the good characters. Tagging the neutral means for the most part, those of this alignment are law-abiding citizens who distaste of too much order or too much chaos. To this end a neutral good character is more likely to do the good thing (which by the way are often DM hooks) and still play their character acording to thier alignment.

Ick no. I don't want everyone judging me all the time.....no LG. I'd rather everyone else be NG.

I guess I was left wondering best alignment for what?

As a person in real life?

As a sadistic jerk who offends other players and runs rampant over the gaming session, all the while claiming to be merely "roleplaying"?

To ensure you the easiest chance of finding a hook to get involved in the game and integrate into the party?

I think ultimately it depends on the goals of the players and of the campaign. I've played the gamut, and while most of the evil campaigns (particularly the CE campaigns) have spiraled into PC vs PC backstabbing (I once tried to betray my whole party to a dragon in exchange for some magic items, but I was a gnome illusionist), I cant say that I havent had some good times being the bad guy.

Ill stop now, before I denegrate into yet another alignment debate. FWIW, I hate alignment.

Neutral Good.

You get to be all good and heroic without worrying too much about how you go about it. A little lawful, a little chaotic, a little neither - doesn't matter.

I know what you are referring to, but look at the 3 evil alignments again. They are not described as the best alignment to be.

I like any good alignment, thus I voted NG.

As a player running a character, the best alignment to play is CN. It's a *game*! I spend enough time in real life toeing other peoples' lines; in the game I want the chance to shrug off the rules and do whatever I bloody-well like now and then; even if it gets my character killed in the process, the entertainment for all involved is worth it! :)
