Which is your favorite Battlestar Galactica series thus far?

Got to go with the new.

I've seen little of either show. I was a baby when the original was one the air. About 10 years ago or so, I saw a tape of the pilot, and I wasn't impressed. It looked like pretty generic space opera, with a lot of 70's flavor tacked on.

I saw the pilot for the new series, but that's about it, since I don't have cable. And I have to say, that I was certainly impressed. It's a more believable universe, the characters seem more real, and I'd rather look at that blonde Cylon than the old bucketheads any day of the week. :p Only downside to the new is the female Starbuck, he was the only cool thing about the original.

Don't know what the 1980 thing is, isn't that just connected to the original or something?

Must have missed that myself. Oddly enough in the real world old tech is generally regarded as weaker security-wise.
Well, in a way, the new technology was better security-wise.

Their first Cylon War technology could be hijacked by the Cylons. The Galactica was created with technology that the Cylons couldn't easily hack into (since there was nothing to hack into, and all different parts of the computer ecosystem of Galactica were not networked, thus viruses couldn't spread).
But the next generation of Battlestars was high-tech as ever, since the Colonials trusted their new security. And they were "nearly" right with that - the only way the Cylons could break the security was due to an insider placing a backdoor. Without that, the Cylons might not have been able to make their attack.

Voted for the original, despite some really bad writing. Mostly because I don't care for all the doom and gloom of the new one. Stopped watching it after the second season. It may be (is) more 'realistic', but I want triumphant Heroes, darnit!

I liked the start of the new BSG, but it let me down pretty quick. It got to the point where there wasn't a single character I actually liked or cared for. At this point I'm rooting for the Centurions and Raiders to take out the Colonials and Skinbags.

While I enjoyed the first incarnation, I like the current one more (I won't even get into 1980, which was unbelievably bad). The current series is so much more tightly written with encapsulated episodes and continuity that I think, as a general entertainment effort, it is operating at a much higher level than the original could ever have attained. And it pulls it off with good acting and interesting story lines.

That said, there's sometimes too much of a good thing, at least when you watch the BSG DVDs in a short time frame. The heavy drama of the current show sometimes requires you to take a break and watch some mindless sitcoms just to lighten the mood. I don't think I'd have that endurance issue watching the original series again.
