Which version of D&D or D&D-like will you be playing by the end of 2008 ?

Since my group is in the early part of the campaign (6th level), we're going to stick with 3.5 probably until we retire the current set of characters. I'm sure this will take at least the rest of the year. After that, we'll have a serious look at 4e.

4e & 3.5e - two separate campaigns, two separate editions. However, I don't expect that 3.5 campaign to last beyond 2009, we should finally have our story-arc done where we can put it to rest after (at that time) about 6 years.

3.5 for the foreseeable future, though I may look into Pathfinder.

Until 4th edition opens up a few more options, via classes and the like, I'm not sure it interests me all that much. And while I'd say it's about as significant a departure from 3rd edition as 3rd edition was from 2nd, that means it's only further divorced from what I know as "D&D." And where it harkens back to previous editions, well...I liked the customization of 3rd edition, which seems problematic with 4th.

So seeing as how the next round of classes is due for 2009, I see myself mostly sticking with 3.5 until the end of 2008.

Its hard to tell what I will be involved in by the end of the year. I am running keep on the borderlands converted to 4e just to see how it goes over with the group but they are predisposed to hate 4e. We came off a 3.5 campaign (ravenloft TPK ) and I'm burned out on the system so that's out.

This week we played 1e for the first time and I was impressed by how much fun it was and how amazingly fast combat went. So I picked 1e from the poll options.

I'll probably play 1e and 4e but will be reluctant to pick up 3.5 again. It's too much work.

True20 for everything else (Fantasy, Star Wars, Spy)

I'll probably finish my 3.5 campaign in a few months, and then Shackled City 3.5 is on the table, as well as BRP CoC and a few other suggestions as well.

Nobody's suggested switching to Pathfinder or 4e that I'm aware of, and I'd be highly surprised if anyone does.

Well, I'm currently running Keep on the Shadowfell--despite disliking what I've seen of 4E, I felt compelled to give it a fair shot in play. Our first session went alright, but not great. The emphasis on tactical miniatures-based combat is a little bit much for me--sort of the opposite direction that I would like D&D to move in, personally. I prefer combat to be faster and more narrative and imagination-based. I have other gripes as well, but I won't go into them here. That said, I'm looking at both C&C and OSRIC/1E as alternatives. Labyrinth Lord/Basic D&D looks interesting and quite well-done as well (I started with the Classic D&D boxed set [1994]) but I like having the full range of race/class combinations available.

That's about it for D&D or D&D-like. Other than that, I have Spirit of the Century and have been wanting to play it. Actually, there's a whole list of other RPGs I've been wanting to try: Call of Cthulhu, Trail of Cthulhu, Sorcerer, The Riddle of Steel, Ars Magica, WHFRP, Runequest... the list goes on.

Actually, I think that's pretty much what I expected (not that that in itself isn't interesting). Of course not everyone is going to instantly adopt the new system because presumably they're in the middle of something right now anyway. And of course, not everybody is going to necessarily adopt 4e at all. And of course, plenty of gamers play other games than just "whatever the current edition of D&D is today" so naturally some of the other options get respectable numbers.

Besides, what you're playing now and what you buy and expect to play sometime undetermined in the future are not necessarily the same thing.

Sigh. You do realize that you are much more tiresome than they are with that attitude, right? I'm hardly a 4e fan, and I'm not planning on adopting the books anytime soon, if at all. But almost every post I've seen of yours expresses open hostility towards 4e and those who play it. Even as a non-fan I don't see any value in that.
