Who can be a superior archer-extraordinaire: A Ranger or Fighter?

Just wondering which class would better excel as an archer specialist if they devote their feats and other stuff towards becoming a master archer of sorts.

I would say Fighter. You've got more feats, in a faster progression than a Ranger. Plus, you could develop alternate abilities with those spare feats. Also, you won't be wasting any class features on woodsy stuff - which a Ranger does.

Even Bard might be interesting

For ranger/fighter: A guerilla type archer who shoots from afar and vanishs into the woods to shoot some minutes later: Ranger.

Mounted archer or "melee" archer: Fighter.

Cleric and Ranger/Fighter Multiclass with Order of the Bow Initiate or Deepwood Sniper PrC should be at the top (or even Peerless Archer cheesiness).

A Rogue/Wizard/Arcane Trickster or Ranger/Wizard/Eldritch Knight can also be a very good archer.

A Psychic Warrior can be pretty nasty as well, I'm sure.

Eldritch Knight is nice, that's right... though I guess the AT build wouldn't need a bow

It depends. If a ranger is fighting his favoured enemy he can win hands down. Otherwise not.
