Who does Steve Jackson Think He's Kidding???

Michael Morris

First Post
Steve Jackson Games are about to make their first foray into the d20 field with what is shaping up to be the most overpriced piece of bile yet thrown on the d20 community... The Munchkin PHB, DMG and MM... Here's the insult..

48 pages = $15

HUH?

There are MAGAZINES with more material than that at $5.

Yes, I know it's a rant, but I get the feeling SJ & company are still miffed that d20 has kicked GURPs teeth out in the sales field. But putting out overpriced product isn't going to endear them to anyone.

PS I know it's hardback, but who in their right mind hardbacks a 48 page book?? The binding will be thicker than the page cross-section. The smallest I've ever seen before where the PO books at 128 pages hardback.

I think that's part of the joke. Who in their right mind would publish such a thing? It's ridiculous. But it is the kind of thing you'd expect from a game called d20 Munchkin.

good points. Its not like it takes a lot of imagination to crank out munchkin esque stuff. Any true munchkin who is suckered into buying a book about it, deserves to get ripped off.

I had begun to think that maybe Munchkin d20 would be a good, solid game with a sense of humor, along the lines of HackMaster. I think the price is too high, though, and the hardback seems excessive. However, maybe this all is, indeed, part of the humor. I'd be interested in reading reviews of it.

If the price hurts sales as much as I think it will, the joke may indeed be on SJ. Making contributions to the local landfill when the distributors can't get the product to sell hurts the bottom line, and can cause a bankruptcy a 'la TSR.

[sarcasm] What a timely release, spoofing the 3.0 Player's Handbook cover. I'm surprised they don't wait 6 months to have it even more appropriate. [/sarcasm]

Well, SJG has been in the gaming business for quite awhile, so I'm sure he knows what he's doing. Remember when GURPS Russia was sold direct to customers? Or when SJG decided to not sell miniatures in blister packs? How 'bout putting an online gaming magazine? Also, many of the GURPS sourcebooks obviously have a small audience. GURPS Myth, anyone?

Munchkin is a **very** expensive game. The base game is $25. The first expansion is $17. The spin-off (Star Munchkin) is $25. The two Munchkin t-shirts are $18 each (one male, one female, one for Star Munchkin). The miniatures are $25. There's even going to be a level counter for $10. That totals about $150. Don't even ask about Chez Geek. (:

Munchkin d20 is also illustrated by John Kovalic. I assume there will be much new art in Md20 and JK doesn't come cheap. Or rather, he **shouldn't** come cheap. He's one of the most popular artists in the gaming business, owns part of a game company, and has had to turn away work.

Anyway, I'll also wait for the review.

(Say, did anyone notice that if you bought each of the four X-Bugs game sets, you would have spent $100 on tiddlywinks??? (;

I don't think SJ or anyone else really ever expected GURPS to beat d20 in sales.
