Who eats the XP loss when an efreeti grants wishes?

Ok you have an efreet that SOMEHOW wants to GIVE wishes to your major NPC villian. First problem, the major NPC had better be handing over some sort of recompense for the use of the wishes. And I ain't talking about after the party is defeated either:) The reason ANY creature that can grant wishes doesn't want to is very simple. Other creatures are so self-centered and though predictable in what they want still un-predictable due to their "lesser" status; that I don't want to grant them anything since who knows how it'll turn out. I would have the efreet put some muscle with this so-called "friend" perhaps some magmen or something to keep and eye out on him:D Can't have Mr give-me-another-wish not toeing the line of the agreement can we? Good hook for the pcs to try and get the efreet to beleiive it's goals are easier to achieve without the major in the way. Then the party can divide and conquer:rolleyes:

Alrighty.

First, if the efreet and the NPC are allies, then of course the efreet is going to grant the NPC wishes - it's the only way that the efreet can use it's ability, and the efreet wants to live and beat the PCs!

Is it a bit much for a CR 8 creature? Yeah, which is why you adjust the EL of the encounter appropriately.

Absolutely.

Sure, you could, but the only reason you would need to is if you have placed a funky-one-of-a-kind-efreet-reject-NPC into the game. ECL is determined by the CRs of the NPCs and monsters. The ECL of the efreet and NPC shouldn't be any higher than normal, even with the Wish ability of the Efreet. Why? Simple. Efreets don't simply hand out wishes. If they did, their CRs would be much higher.

So, if you are in fact dealing with a funky-one-of-a-kind-efreet-reject-NPC that likes to grant wishes to it's master  (which is damn strange in and of itself), then you would definately need to raise that CR a bit.

I think (although it has not been stated thus explicitly) that the efreets power to grant wishes works the same as the noble djinns power: it grants wishes to those that capture him. And I don't know if an efreet will humble himself by standing still so the villain can cry tag him, say "gotcha" and demand three wishes because he "captured" the efreet.

If the efreet could (and would) grant the wishes without a second thought, all his allies (or at least the ones that have been allied with it a while) would have +3 inherent bonuses to all ability scores...

And this is what exactly happends in lord of the iron fortress. The efreet raises the abilities of his giant bodyguard. I think the el was raised because of it, or the pc's were awarded 20% more XP.
