can an epic wizard take Innate Spell to get infinite Wishes with no XP cost?

Actually...

If the innate spell has an XP component, you pay the XP each time you use the spell-like ability.

Wow! They've actually thought about that one in advance!

I *think* Thanee was just quoting the part about the Innate Spell Feat. I think that monster's innate spells are treated differently.

So an efreeti pays 15,000 experience points every time he shows up to grant somebody three wishes?

No. Natural (inherent, racial, whatever you wanna call them) Spell-like abilities do not require an XP component in any way. The spell-like ability granted by the Innate Spell feat, however, does.

From the SRD, about summoned (not called) creatures.

When the spell that summoned a creature ends and the creature disappears, all the spells it has cast end (if they haven't already). A summoned creature cannot use any innate summoning abilities it may have, and it refuses to cast any spells or use any spell-like abilities that would cost it XP.

Seems to me that it costs the creature XP. I'd hate to face a fiend that can cast wish 1/year.

#1: It'll cast wish in combat. :D
#2: It's 1000s of years old. It could be covered with permanent spells and have insane ability score bonuses (+5 to all) if wish didn't cost it anything.
#3: On Sean K Reynolds site, in the Spells sections, there's a topic entitle "An Old Question About Permanency" where XP costs are detailed. In short, 1 XP = 5 g. So, for every 1000 XP spent on a wish, that fiend better lose 5000 gp worth of treasure.
#4: About the villain who gets free wishes, I'd take $ out of his gear, too. After all, if said villain stumbled upon a manual of health, it still costs him $.

No, they are not!

*blink*

Well, their spell-like abilities are, but not their innate spells, if they are spellcasters and aquire that feat... :D

*hides*

Yeah, what IceBear meant is exactly what it is... I thought the innate spell part in the quote was enough to point that out, but obviously wasn't...

Here's the relevant quote from MM about the spell-like abilities:

Spell-like abilities are magical and work just like spells (though they are not spells and so have no verbal, somatic, material, focus, or XP components).

It does NOT cost you XP for using spell like abilities as stated earlier. The efreeti wouldn't be able to cast one wish at all otherwise. IThis exact same thing happens in lord of the iron fortress.

Pg 7 MM:

Spell like abilities: Spell like abilities are magical and work justlike spells(through they are not spells and have no verbal, somatic, material focus or XP components). They go away in an antimagic field and are subject to SR.

Wonder, what this means about summoned creatures, that can grant Wishes... since it says they refuse to use abilities that cost them XP (and they rarely have such abilities), they could be allowed to use spell-like abilities resembling spells with an XP cost.

However, I suppose it means, that they generally refuse to use abilities, when the relevant spell has an XP cost, altho it does not cost them any XP.
