Who is this person, and why do they not know what a gish is?

It's been a fairly common term seen on these very boards, even away from the rules forum, for at least several months now. So, it's moved well away from 'small subset of D&D players'.

I've seen it on these very boards, but had no idea what it meant until this thread.

(BTW, I love your sig :D )

Add me to the list of those who only recently heard of this.
(And,for the record: A) I hate that term, and B)I've been playing since 1E.)

Hasn't the term been around for a long time, at least several years?

Maybe even back into 2e?

It strikes me as if a someone working for a car magazine doesn't know about the trend of using light, fast, Japanese cars instead of larger, American muscle cars.

Not very impressive.

I think Morrus knows what a gish is, but like many of us, doesn't like that it's being used generically. It has been around for years, it's a class of githyanki. Anyone that used that term to my face would get the same snide response from me.

I've been playing since late in 1e and the middle of this year is the first time I had heard the term and it was on thse boards. I do not mind it.

Oh, and Morrus rocks.

With respect, we here at EN World ARE a small subset of D&D players.

And this tiny subset (numbering one) of that small subset had never heard of the term "gish" until relatively recently, here on these boards, and was under the impression - now shown to be wrong - that it was a slang term for any fighter-type/wizard-type multiclass.

And as fighter-wizards probably don't need their own term to describe them, I can live without the word if everyone else can. :)

So... what else is a gish?

Gargantuan fish? (that got away...)
Giant sushi?
Ginormous shellfish?

Do I care what someone knows or doesn't know as a game term? Why do you?

You're talking about words used by millions of people, not a few thousand. "Gish" is an obscure term among gamers, who are a small subset of society as a whole.

Sure... But those terms likely started being used by a small subset of people (for instance, only those that worked as mechanics likely had any call to use the term crescent wrench), and their widespread use came later, gradually.

We're only recently (within the last few years) seeing the term gish used in its generic form, so its use is likewise fairly uncommon, at this point. But I'm certain that its usage will only increase with time.

This entire website is a small subset of D&D players. If we ALL used it in EVERY post...we're still just a small subset of D&D players.

Oh God I hope not. It and the misspelling of rogue as rouge are two things I`d love to never set eyes upon again. :\
