Who played the better Buffy the Vampire Slayer?

Anywho....
I didn't think much of the movie but I love the show. But I'll have to agree with Crothian and say they weren't really the same thing and are comparable in title only. Joss had very little creative control over what happened in the movie but he has basically free-reign over the show and it shows.

I would have to go with Sarah as Buffy for several reasons but mostly because I like the series better than the movie. When the movie first came out, I wasn't too impressed with it. Then when I heard that they were going to do a tv series, I thought what a stupid idea. Luckily, the tv series Buffy didn't seem as airy as the movie version.

Like others have said, the show and the movie were very different animals.
That said, the series is much better than the movie, and Sarah is a much better actress than Kristy.

I have to admit, Kristy Swanson is a much hotter Buffy, especially when she made a career move to pose for Playboy recently.
But SMG does a better Buffy.

Who plays the better Buffy?
Sarah Michele Gellar.
Why?
Because, IMHO, she is a better actress.
Judging by the few performances I have seen Kristy Swanson in, I can’t imagine her carrying Buffy with the same strengths that SMG has brought to the character.
But she is hot!
I read that Charisma Carpenter auditioned for the role. But she is, and will always be, Cordelia in my mind. It is odd that SMG also auditioned for Cordielia (and got the part) before being asked to try out for Buffy. Hmm. How the series might have been different.
I have also read that Elizabeth Anne Allen, who plays Amy the witch, also auditioned for the role of Buffy.
As did Julie Benz, who plays Darla.
As did Katie Holmes (Dawson’s Creek).
As did Selma Blair, the girl who kissed SMG in Cruel Intentions.
I'm wondering how Buffy might have been different if someone else had played the role. They must have had massive auditions for the part of Buffy when the series was in development.

Ah, a kindred spirit. I could've hardly summed it better myself. I'm just glad to know I'm not the only one experiencing the disenchantment. Disenchanted with Buffy? Me? Why would I be disenchanted with the Days of Our Unlives morass it's become?
But to answer the question, I enjoyed SMG in the role better. Whether that's due to all of the other differences between the movie and TV series, I can't say for sure.
