Who should be the new James Bond? (merged with "Brosnan Quits" Thread)

Who should be the new James Bond?

Since Brosnan was snubbed for Bond 21 (see scifi news), who'd make the best new James Bond?
I'd go with Clive Owen...

I didn't think Brosnan made a bad Bond, I just thought the scripts he was given were so incredibly godawful as to warp the fabric of the space-time continium.

Clive Owen would work for me. But the way this franchise is going, they'll get Owen Wilson.

I thought Clive Owen was already tapped to play 007. I don't think they could have made a better choice, honestly.

Youth does not make James Bond. PB brought life back to the character and franchise has stood the test of time (bad scripts and stories) but NEVER bad actors, scripts, and stories. Whoever they get better have some idea how to act and not just be the-hot-boytoy-in-town-this-week, there is commitment to the role!

If Pierce Brosnan has been given the boot, I think I'm finally done watching Bond movies. There comes a time to just retire a movie franchise, and I think Bond has gotten to that point.

I agree. The Bond Formula has gotten tired, imho. They might be able to revive the series by abandoning some of the cliches, but they tried to diverge from The Path in the late '80s and people screamed bloody murder. It's time to move on. I'm much more excited to see The Bourne Supremacy and the next episode of Alias than I would ever be for another shaken-not-stirred.

I agree; Brosnan was a fine Bond, and I enjoyed his versions of the hero as much as anyone elses. As long as you can accept the forumlaic nature of the movies, he was good at it.

My favorite Bond movie of all time, though, was The Living Daylights. In many ways, it abandoned the Bond movie formula, was more or less realistic rather than goofy, and both the hero and the world were noticably darker in nature. Great stuff!

I agree with some of you, the Bond series should just stop making more movies right now. It's been watered down by bad scripts, A-list stars, and the 100 other spy movies that have been made over the last 10 years. IMHO, they should give it a rest until they can write or get a better and more original script AND cast more believable actors/actresses.

Anytime Halle Barry is in the movie, you know it's over.

Tell me that this isn't just a kick in the pants:

The London press is saying that though Brosnan's last Bond film, "Die Another Day," which teamed him with actress Halle Berry, pulled in more than $300 million at the box office, the producers don't believe he can top that.

A spokesman for Eon Productions (which owns the Bond franchise) confirmed that Brosnan may "retire" as 007. "We are always looking to target younger audiences. . . . We want fans who will still be watching in 40 years."

Or, to summarize, Brosnan just made the studio a boatload of cash, but he no longer fits the target demographic, so we're dumping him.

It would take a lot to suck me back into this franchise. He could have done one more movie. All this is made much less relevent by the fact that there is now officially no continuity between the series of Bond films. The cold war has been over for how long now? It has become little more than a moneymaker for the studio that has long since turned Bond into a caricature of his former self.

Bond rarely seemed to interact directly with the Cold War in many ways. The Russians, for instance, were never the villains in his movies, although a Cold War backdrop was certainly part of it. Especially, again, in my favorite, The Living Daylights. Did I also mention A-ha did the theme song for that one? :)
