Who's looking at Eberron? seeking advice from PBPers

First Post
Ok, I just got my copy last night, and I've only read the first 3 chapters so far, but I'm wondering.... are there any GM's ready to run an Eberron PBP out there? I'm considering it, but I've got a lot going on right now, (running my own business, starting back to college after 18 years out of school, running a regular Saturday night game, and of course family stuff) and I've only just started playing in one PBP game.

I really don't have the time, but after reading what I have I'm all charged up to play (or possibly run) an Eberron PBP

I guess what I'm asking is a couple of questions...

1) Is anyone planning on starting an Eberron PBP soon?

2) How much PBP experience would experienced (having run a PBP for 3 or 4 months) GM's recommend one have before attempting to run a PBP?

3) How much time does running a PBP take? From my (admittedly limited) experience they seem to be fairly slow, with little time pressure. Am I looking at 2-4 hours a week? More? Less?

Thanks, Chris

Hi, Chris. Here're some answers --

1) I hope so (I might eventually, but between moving, a job search, and running a PbP for the RL group I'm leaving here in Chapel Hill, I'm not necessarily sure running it would be smart, but see answer 3 for that).

2) I'd say jump right in. You may wish to browse or scan some of the longer running PbPs in this forum and see what you can pick up from those GMs (how do they handle combat? how long do they wait before autopiloting a character? that sort of thing).

3) I'd say 2 hours a week is probably on the low side, but four or five could be right. It really depends on how verbose you are, how active the game is, how familiar you are with the rules, how different from the norm your world is, and that sort of thing. When I was running two games and playing in four or five, I figured on an hour a night, a little more if I was running more than one game (I'm a wee bit verbose).

Just my thoughts, some others could give you a better idea, I'm sure.

Best,
Nick

Thanks for the comments Nick. I can sympathize with your busy life right now, I've got the same kind of thing going myself. Four hours a week probably won't be unworkable starting in a month or so, Once I get past the busy time with work. I'll keep thinking about it, and hope for a few more folks to chime in with advice. It'll take me a few more days just to finish reading the doggon book anyway.

An Eberron game? I'd love to play (not got the time to DM, unfortunately, as I think my other four games might suffer...) :)

I picked up my first game only a couple of weeks after joining my first Pbp. I started small with one of WotC's free online adventures, just to get used to things. I should have gone a bit bigger cause those really lack plot. But I say start with something small till you have a handle on it, but other than that jump right in.

Yeah I think that 2 hours per week should cover you. During your recruitment pitch you can always advertise how often you plan to post. If you want to keep things manageable try something like 2-3 times per week. Then about 2 hours should be enough time. PbP games tend to take quite a long time to progress. During rp-based sessions even less time is needed as you only need to reply to the posts made. During combat it takes a bit more time as you are covering all the stats and rolls made. Vary those two factors add in a bit of puzzlesolving and you can try to match your real life schedule to what the amount of time you dedicate to GMing per week.

Count me in!!

I'm only halfway thru the CSB, but I would most definitly be interested in playing, for now. Down the road I may have some more time to actually run a game. Once that happens, I'll try to recruit from players that posted in this thread first.

Well, with the advice I've gotten so far I've pretty much decided that I will run an Eberron PBP within the next month or so. I've got both my daughter and her BF leaving for college (to different cities) soon, so that will give me a chance to keep both of them in my a game. I'll post when I'm ready to start, and include all the details (most of which haven't been decided yet) then.
