D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

Wow! Your repeated, willful mischaracterization of other positions is intense. Where in this thread have I, @AlViking, @Lanefan or @Necropolitan said that the GM should willfully ignore the group and be a domineering, spiteful a-hole?

You've continually misconstrued "having a clear leader" with "being a petty tyrant." At this point I have to assume you aren't discussing in good faith.

It's a common theme that's gets repeatedly introduced even in threads that have nothing to do with GM authority.

Why does anyone have to save the group from a crappy player? You make it sound like a hijacking. You have player agency. Just stop playing with that player.

How is that going to happen? The crappy player is not the one organizing and GMing the game. By your logic the GM has no more control over who is at the table or what happens than anyone else. Meanwhile if I like the GM and everyone else at the table it is very difficult to vote one person out. Speaking from experience if the GM has a bit more control and is the final authority, it is far easier for the GM to explain the issues the rest of the group is having with that player and ask them to change or leave.

I've heard tell of a creature like that in the old country.... Some called it the Baba Yaga. We just called it the "GM."

I've been playing for a long, long time. Play with enough DMs for long enough and yes, you'll run across that 1% of DMs that make decisions I don't care for. Meanwhile I see no reason to throw the baby out with the bathwater when in 99% of the cases having a DM that made the final call worked better than the alternative.

Because collaborating with someone who has final authority teaches a different lesson. A lack of GM likely just results in whoever is the most vocal, imposing, or extroverted, taking control. /shrug
Yeah, in my experience a leader will emerge in any social situation if one is not designated, and if one is designated it's no guarantee it won't be challenged. Said emergent de-facto leader tends to be the person with the strongest opinions and/or personality. This doesn't mean they always get their way, but more often than not.
