Why do you game?

I'm over-civilized.
If I had grown up in the Paleolithic era, about 50% of my brain would be devoted to avoiding tar-pits and giant snakes and what not, while the other 50% would be devoted to picking up hot cave-girls. As it is today, it takes only 25% of my brain to dodge muggers and get the burritos from the store to my mouth, so that leaves a quarter of my brain totally free! The cave-girls still take half though...

But really, I can't not think about games. Even if I'm not running/playing in one, I'm brewing up something in the back of my head. When I see movies and read books, I think about stealing bits for games. My Game-Brain is always, always working. I've been doing it for so long, it's a part of who I am.

I really don't know if that's bad or kind of awesome. :\

Where else can you watch the evil Necromancer whack the halfling over the head with a rod of immobility, then turn around and convince the paladin to betray all that he has fought and bled for to save his love, all while commanding vast armies of undead to march across the great marsh and lay waste to the peaceful glades of the elves?!?!

Oh wait....you asked why do I play games, not why I run them... :p

interesting question Gorlla726 and yes I'd like to hear your answer
and I believe Alzrius has the ultimate answer "Why do you not", and Grackle for what it's worth I find it kind of awesome. I think my answer along with agreeing with Alzrius is because when a game is done right. When it all comes together either the roleplaying or the action hopefully both at the same time but when it's really working gaming is more engaging mentally than just about anything out there. I liken it to the way a good book is better than a good movie. It's so much more in the mind well a well done roleplaying game makes that book look as bad as the movie since you don't know if the heroes (or villian if that's your cup o tea) will win the day. Even the best book reading is just a passive thing.

so to sum up this long ramble gaming is engaging most other things passive.

1. I like monsters (thats what got me into D&D in the first place).

2. I like the idea of telling and participating in a grand story.

3. It is about the only chance I get to spend time with my friends these days.

For the money, the fame and the groupies (same answer that I give people when they ask why I teach English).

Seriously, I game because it's just such a great creative outlet for me and an excellent way to keep my brain buzzing all the time.
