Why Half-Elves???

Why? Well in 2e it is because it was the only race worth playing, avoiding nearly all of the class penalties for being an elf, not having any ability reduction, and avoiding the lameness that was human. (not to mention that the others are all short, and we know how that goes).

Now? The only reason should be RP. The fact the people don't consider the half-elf "default" any more is a good thing IMO. I do agree with the immune to sleep thing (since they do need to). I also hate that there are half-elfs but no half-anything elses (except orcs...shudder). I would rather get with a dwarf or a gnome than an orc any day.

Maybe not the Gnome or the Dwarf, but everyone seems to want to get it on with Halflings. Why don't we have any threequarterlings?

In earlier editions, Halflings looked like Tolkein's Hobbits -- no-one wanted to get it on with a Hobbit.

Lidda is a different kind of Halfling -- the borderline "kiddie porn" kind if you ask me, but you didn't.

Does no one do anything anymore because of a desire to roleplay? Is it all about rollplaying now? God, I'm sick of all the whining about half-elves lately. Try picking a race that you think is interesting and fun rather than reducing it all down to munchkinism. At the end of the day, what matters more - the enjoyment of the concept and story or the enjoyment of the dice rolling?

for many many people (not me, but some) it is enjoyment of the dice rolling. It is completely unfair to judge those who aren't into the role playing aspects. It is their game too.

D&D was not (no matter what anyone tries to sell you) founded as a storytelling game. It evolved into that. It started out as a beat up orcs and demons kind of game.

I don't think that any race is more powerful than the others, overall. Certain races definitely draw toward power gaming with certain classes. Half-elves have the freedom of the human but the connection to the elven world needed for things like the arcane archer. It works for some.

The Midnight Campaign Setting has Elflings which are Halfling/Elves.

That said, about 90% of the halfling population has been sold into slavery; a great many of which serve as prostitutes.

Reason #2177 to love Midnight!

It also has Dworgs (Dwarf/Orcs)!

Reason #2178 to love Midnight!

That's easy...

Everyone wanted to know what would happen if their human adventurer got a little too frisky with that elven princess they rescued.

Not so many people were eager to get frisky with a gnome or bearded dwarf woman...

I don't know cast an enlarge spell on the new gnome and halflings and we're in business. Dwarfs are still out, unless its a male dwarf and human female.

A new player asked me recently, why someone would want to play a half-elf, unless he REALLY wanted to do it for the ROLE-Playing, and for the life of me, I couldn't think of any reason. What do you guys think?

Because gosh darn it people like me.

I agree with you, Nifft.
IMC halflings are still 2ed halflings.
I always liked to play a halfling 2ed.

Just my 2 cents
