Why is Palladium so ant-d20?

To everyone that would like a copy of my conversions...I can't. I was sent a C&D letter due to starting to house my ideas on an old Fortune City page. (I wasn't too worried about Palladium at the time.) My lawyer suggested that I just take it all down and not try to see how far Palladium would take action. So, the very fact that people are outright asking for copies on a very public message board makes me a bit anxious. I know, I'm likely just paranoid and being a big wuss, but better safe than sorry. However...if those documents ever ended up on a fileshare server, like Ares, from one of the few people that do have a copy...What can I do?

Looks like SJGames is #2 in RPG sales at least according to this post from todays Daily Illuminator over at thier website:

"In other news, we really liked our rankings in the newest edition of Comics & Games Retailer. It looks as though end-of-the-year GURPS sales really powered us up . . . we were ranked second, behind only D&D, in unit sales for RPGs. We were third-ranked publisher in "piece share," a score that lumps together all of each publisher's titles. Both these are all-time high ranks for us. Happy happy.

And how did a couple dozen that you mentioend earlier turn into close to 200 unless you're also counting products that were developed by completely seperate companies that had distribution partnerships with White Wolf, i.e., Fiery Dragon, Malhavoc, etc.? Those don't count, since White Wolf didn't develop them. If you're also calling Warcraft and Everquest -- two completely separate lines -- part of that "line" you've got a funny definition of what a line of products is.

Also, look at what White Wolf are producing today. Scarred Lands had a good run, but its kaput. World of Darkness is still undergoing a massive relaunch.

According to White Wolf's own website they have exactly 202 products under the Sword & Socery Studios banner. SS&S was not just Scarred Lands as you seem to suggest.

I actually never suggested that. In fact, I specifically said that other lines like Everquest and Warcraft were also done by S&SS, and that other lines developed by other companies such as Malhavoc, Necromancer, etc. were published and distributed by SS&S.

I don't know how I can specifically say one thing and then "seem to suggest" the exact opposite with the same words.

I mean, really, in how many other systems can you play an anthropomorphic mutant cougar psychic from the Outback who meets up with a techno-wizard Asgardian dwarf and a young amnesiac demigod and then goes dino-hunting in what's left of Florida, vampire-hunting in the desert Southwest, and finally off to do Shadowrun-like missions in a planet-sized city? (And no, I didn't just make that up. Those really are tidbits from the campaign.)

PLANESCAPE!

Though, admittedly, it would take a bit of work. ;)

Don't be such a big wimp. Palladium is not going to sue you.

Hehehe. Yeah, I know the chances of such are slim to none. However, I'm not likely to do it just yet. Like I said, there are a few people that have a copy and have access to file swapping programs like Ares. It may likely show up there...

Well, Charles Ryan's data (the 75% market share for WotC) are from last year :). These were the ones I referred to ;).

You should never take what company reps say at face value, especially including what they say here.

Oh, no worries, I don't. He said himself that he doesn't trust the number completely. This was just the answer they got from the marketing research company. You always have to keep in mind that the numbers from the game and comic stores don't include sales via outlets like Borders, Barnes & Nobles, Walmart or amazon, and these outlets are not available for most small companies. This explains the discrepancy between Ken Hite's 45% and WotC's 75%. The real number may be somewhere in between ;).
