i still picture him as the kid from Stand by Me with River Phoenix.

it's gonna hard realizing he isn't a kid anymore.

I'm not sure which is the worst thing for the hobby - that he's writing a column in Dungeon, or that gamers are excited he's writing a column in Dungeon.

Stuff like this is why gaming will never become even remotely mainstream.

Hold on a second there, chief. Wesley Crusher may have been a wet noodle, but Wil Wheaton is another matter entirely. He's cool. Do us a favor and educate yourself before further disparaging the man: http://www.wilwheaton.net/faq.php#trek

It's me. I'm actually Wil.

Wil, the beard does nothing for you - it makes you look much older than when you were on Next Generation. You need to shave it off. :p

...but he's going to be involved in a campaign starting very soon, and that might be the catalyst for getting him on boards like these. We'll see. One of his early columns (first, maybe?) is about how much harder it is to find the time to play as an adult with a job and a family as compared to the good old days when we were young and could play all night.

Well, then, wherever he is, I wish him luck, and I'm definitely looking forward to it.

While I wish that is true, I have seen a lot of people in the gaming community that does not fit in the categories of "freaks & geeks." There is now a lot of "betties & hotties," aka the Populars.

We're losing the one thing that makes us special. Heck, we're even losing our sacred canon -- The Lord of The Rings -- to the mainstream.

I mean what's next? Pamela Anderson does XML?

:p

Well, whatever it is, It'll probably still have an "X" in it somewhere.

Anyway, Wil isn't exactly a "newbie hanger-on", either. He's a fellow gamer, no matter where he lives and what he does. Heck, what makes him any less a gamer than screen writer John Rogers, a man who can write some JAM-UP story hours and screenplays? :)

Yeah, but a lot of devoted gamers are put off by the celeb status, or any prestigious status, such as a corporate executive officer.

While other gamers would look at them as confirmation that normal people can be gamres too and can have cool jobs other than bagging groceries, fixing company's server in a sub-level basement, or stuck in any office cubicle with minimal social contacts with the upper-level management (if they call you, it is one of two things: work promotion or termination).

It's usually harder for me to realize that I'm not a kid any more.

Wait. I guess I still am.
