What I mean by standard, is a PHB that does not contain anything extra such as DM content and monsters. The book would contain everything the "player" needs but not everything the DM needs.

I'm undecided. But not because of the price, but because only the Starter Set will tell me whether I realy want it or select one of the many old versions when startng a new D&D campaign.

No way. Competitors price is too much better and their product is just as good in its own way. Wizards is going to have to cut that price if it wants me on board. Offer a discount if I purchase all three at once or something. I'm easily looking at 240 dollars for the three books if I buy them from a local store. I could get the Pathfinder core and bestiary for only 100 dollars. That's less than half of the cost of 5th.

Even if I buy them online I'm still looking at about 180 dollars. If I buy Pathfinder online I'm looking at about 80 dollars. Still half the price of 5e.

Much like the box one this game is going down in flames based upon the primary factor of its price. Which is a real shame too since I liked this edition. Wizards needs to get with the times though. Hell I would even love a PHB + DMG book and then a Monster Manual. That's doable.

Wizards is getting with the times, in terms of price.

Piazo has the advantage terms of price, as they didn't have to actually develop the system or advertise for it much.

WotC did that for them.

And if WotC did anything but the holy 3 books at launch, a lot of the people they're trying to get back into the fold with 5e would view that as a stike against the game.

Maybe. Yes and no. Ish.

I'm still undecided about 5e as a whole, but the price isn't really a factor in that. If the reviews are positive, I'll buy; if not, I won't.

That said, even if I do buy I won't really be paying $50 since Amazon will no doubt have it for a hefty discount.

No. I'm of the opinion that a book that won't let you play the game on its own (you still need the other big two) isn't worth 50 bucks. I bought all three 3.0 base books for 50 (Euros, but still) in a bundle when it was fresh. This might have been my local gaming store's way to hook up new customers, dunno about Wizards' pricing policy back then.

But it got me into D&D again (after a long absence), and made me spend a fortune on 3E and later 3.5 books, including lots of supplements that went at rather a high price for rather narrow content. If I hadn't got the base books relatively cheap, I would never have been hooked on 3E - in fact I originally bought because I just thought the books were very nicely done, layout and arts wise, and wanted a look. And I would never have spent hundreds of Euros on stuff like the Fiendish Codexes or Shining South or Cityscape or the Eberron Campaign Setting if I'd had to already spend hundreds of Euros to even get into the freaking door!

I'd buy it for 50 dollars

If that's the price, and the product is not 20 pages long or printed on toilet paper, I'd buy it to check out where D&D is going.
