D&D 3.x Will you still play 3.5?

For those making the switch: are you going to keep your 3.5 books? How often do you see yourself pulling them back out?

I am going to keep mine. How often will they get out? Probably fairly rarely.

Who knows. I'll be finishing up this arc in my 3.5 campaign before the summer break, and spend the summer crashing through all 30 levels of 4E. Ah, to be in college. We'll probably decide what to do in August.

The existence of 4e does not bear on whether I'll play in a 3e or 3.5e game.

Already told the gaming group teams that July 4th will be switched to 4th edition. Everyone will be lvl 1 again, etc. Keeping same homebrew universe though, they are scared/wondering whats going to happen.


Already boxed 75% of all my 3.5/3. stuff with 2nd edition, including all the Dragons and Dungeons since Dragon issue 86.

The remaining 25% is for the current ongoing 3.5 ruleset going on, and for use in Neverwinter Nights.

There have been a few complaints, mostly due to the $$ I spent on 3-3.5 (thousands), and the fact they will have to be level 1 again after almost a year to get to 7th level.

I have no plans to abandon 3.5 yet.

4e is still iffy for me right now (I like some stuff and dislike other stuff) and until I actually get hands on with the rules, only then will I make a final determination.

So, the plan will be like every editilon change for our group - keep playing the old rules until the new rules wins everyone over and we settle in with that edition.

However, 4e is the first edition in which not all my players (and myself) have been totally enthusiastic about the revelations to date. This might be the edition which doesn't win everyone over. If it does win our group over, we will play a mixture of 3.5 and 4.0 campaigns until at some point, we will play 4.0 only. If it doesn't win people over, we will go back to 3.5.

I will keep on being the DM of my 3.5E games, none of which will switch to 4E. After the existing campaigns finish, I will most likely start up further 3.5E games. Judging from the information available so far, I am not very keen on running a 4E game, but I would not have a problem playing a D&D 4E CRPG. I would also probably be willing to play in a 4E game DMed by somebody else.

All of the above can still change, as further information becomes available.

absolutely not. If my group and I wanted to play the miniatures game or World of Warcraft we would. We don't. We play D&D because we like to play D&D, and not because we want some emulation of some D&D inspired or sorta-kinda-but-definitely-NOT-D&D game.

We're sticking with 3.5 and the OGL 3.5 SRD stuff - and the third-party game publishers who've made a wealth of information and materials out there to play with and to use. I hope that the system continues to grow, develop, and become a giant in the market despite the power-gamer's fantasy 4th Edition. Heck, maybe in 3-5 years when 4.5 or 5th edition comes out I'll see what Hasbro/WotC has on their minds... Maybe then I'll move to the new rules set - but I don't see it as likely as good as 3.5 is (and yes, it has its faults too - we've simplified and cleaned up things like grapple with some "common sense" ideas - not too hard and WotC COULD HAVE done that too; but that's not why they're changing mechanics... it's all about $$$).

O-M-G! No one told me that WotC was a business and had to make $$$ in order to stay in business. I thought they were a charity.

From what I have seen of 4e so far, I would be very surprised if we ever played 3.5 again, but I am not willing to make that determination until I have actually read the game. We will either convert completely to 4e (probably starting new campaigns to do so) or completely reject 4e and stick with 3.5. I can't see my group playing both for any length of time.
