Working for the Baron - The Adventure

Hargrim takes a long pull from his mug, draining half of it in one go. Sidling up to Zyrial, he hands the cleric his wine and peers at the map. "Even with that river to the north, there's a lot of open space to guard," he says. He glances up at the fellow who approached them. "What have we got to work with?" he asks. "Militia? And I'm afraid I didn't catch your name..."

Day 1 - Goodland, the tavern.

The sheriff silenly listen to you as you talk, when questioned he answes "Brin my name is... As for what we can offer...." he shakes his head sadly. "Not much. I got five deputies, and that's about it for professional militia. You got all the rest of the villagers that gladly will help defend our homes, as well. I guess I can gather up about a fifty men capable of aiding us, but few, if any, got any training at all." with that a general chours of agreements and "Yeah, I'll be killin' a few of those orcs myself..." and such can be heard from the rest of the men currently in the tavern.

Hargrim takes another drink thoughtfully. "Do we know where these orcs are? It might be best to try to get the jump on them..."

Day 1 - Goodland, the tavern

"They were some distance away from the hills to the south, moving northward, the last I heard, early this morning." the sherrif answers Hargrims quesion.

Balin the Elder, Abjur(4)

While Balin was impressed that the locals seemed willing to lend a hand to their cause, he wondered how many would stand when the orcs crashed upon them like a dark wave of chaos.

It will be better not to find out...

As Hargrim seemed to have an idea forming, Balin did not want the dwarf to grow close-lipped now.

"What are you thinking lad? Are we to harry the wolves for a bit? See if we can convince them to seek easier prey?"

Hargrim grins. "If by 'convince them to seek easier prey,' you mean 'hack them to tiny bits before they set foot within a league of this town,' then yes!"

Zyrial

I agree. If we cannot allow them to hear thier dirges here than we shall take thier dirges to them. Zyrial says. He has been strumming his lap harp while the group sits and thinks.

Hey sorry guys getting to busy here, just have Alton run away or die or something, because i wont be or maybe come back here and keep up, its going faster than i thought it would, but just being busy so Alton wont be in the party unless you have someone that might wanna play him. thx for the join in, have fun.

Nodding his head at the dwarf's words, Balin took a drink of his ale and tried not to grimace at the weak flavor of it.

~What did I expect it to be? This is not home where Brewmeister Drakin keeps his casks...~

As he hears Zyrial absently playing a tune, Balin turned to look at the town map once more before speaking to Sheriff Brin.

"While we may not be able to stop them all, perhaps we can thin their ranks somewhat. Do you think you and your militia could fortify the town while we are out? Perhaps have some of the hunters make snares and set pits?"

Turning back to face Hargrim and Zyrial, Balin knew that his spells would be largely ineffective for the road they were about to travel.

"All my life I have studied the path of defensive magic, and while some see it as a coward's path, it has allowed me to see more than my share of summers come and go. However, I will prepare what spells I can that will slow the brutes, but I am too old to charge into the heart of the battle. I say this not because I am scared to do so, but because I want you to know my strengths, as well as my weaknesses."
