WOTC ad - insulting to gamers?

You can call me whatever you like, all these discussions seem to degrade to name calling. I have no compunction or inclination to defend myself from this oft used term though.

The one constant in these discussions that "degrade to name calling" appears to be you. Think about it.

At the heart of it is whether this was designed by a gamer about gamers or by a non-gamer about gamers, even, perhaps, about a sometimes-gamer who doesn't think of himself as one of us.

I see what you're saying, but I remain unconvinced. Even if it was written by someone who never cracked a PHB in his life, that's figuring externalities into the ad that aren't there. The ad should be taken on its own. I can understand someone seeing an implied derision...but it's not an inaccurate image. I mean, everyone I know who plays MMORPGs plays into the wee hours of the morning once in a while (we did before the kids got older) and many MMORPGs users do it regularly. A simple browsing of the activity numbers on WoW shows that. Me, I keep hearing Peter Gabriel singing "There's safety in numbers, when you learn to divide...how can you be in, if there is no outside?"
