I think WotC believes that they have a sure-seller on their hands, and what with the resemblance to Harry Potter and such, they think it'll just fly off of the shelves. I think that what they are predicting is the fact that it will sell based on that semblance alone. I.E., they are trying to "ride the wave" such as they did with Pokemon (shudder) and M:TG and hope that they can stuff it down enough people's throats to turn a profit.
Well, I can tell you that my money's not going into it.

Wow. A lot of anti-steampunk going on.
I love steampunk. I've already ran a steampunk campaign.
I don't know if I'll pick up the setting, but I look forward to what they're doing with it.
Also, a resemblence to a Harry Potter setting, and the kiddie-type stuff? I think that'd be fun, too. Childlike fantasy and wonder is a fun fun thing. *shrug*
I look forward to it.

If it preserves all of the elements that makes D&D what it is, then I'll give it a chance. If not, then I'm kicking it to the curb.

If you want steampunk, but you aren't too sure about the new setting, then just wait for Steam & Steel: A Guide to Fantasy Steamworks, which I am currently putting the finishing touches to and should be published by EN Publishing. It covers rules for steam technology of a dizzying array of types, variations possible on level of technological advancement, materials for constructing steamworks, and of course types of engines (from the more conventional fuel burners to necromantic and arcane engines among others :p ). As well as rules for lots of new steam vehicles, constructs and equipment, it also includes an examination of the kind of impact that steam power can actually have in a setting, so making it easy to modify an existing setting with the introduction of steam technology. Anyway, I should have it finished soon, so I hope you people looking for something steampunk like it! :)

I didn't actually see anything in the article that called it a steampunk setting. Just other people colouring the article with their prejudices.

Looking at the pictures posted I am getting more of a spelljammer / planscape feel.

Where's the release?

The press release was horrible, but I'm still going to give this a chance. I mean, it has piqued my interest.

Hello! I can't find the press release, just the stuff that Gaming Report reported on (and I don't believe that's the actual press release).

Anyone's got a link?

Cheers

I love steampunk - but I hate steampunk+fantasy: I want Verne, Wells, and Haggard. I want alternate history steampunk, I want strange psionic powers, Verne cannons, etherships, Tesla weaponry, and planetary romance on Venus and Mars - I definetly don't want steampunk D&D (though I find steampunk dwarfs in fantasy settings interesting - but only dwarfs)

OK, I just read the Gaming Report article. What in the world is in there making people (esp in the other thread) think that 'Steampunk' = 'Harry Potter'? There's no connection between the two. As in, well, absolutely none.

I'm all about the Steampunk, baby.

C'mon, Privateer Press, where the xxxx is the IK Campaign book, already? Criminey! ('dat be what my gramma sez, yo).
