Would blending rangers and barbarians fix what is wrong with barbarians?

I must disagree - there are huge differences in their abilities too - Conans ability to strike unerringly in complete darkness, sense danger and go into a feral rage, as against Aragorns healing abilities. If you were going to stat out classes to represent those two archetypes I'm sure that most people would come up with quite different classes.

(not to mention that Aragorn wasn't really human either, but numenorean!)

Cheers

Yah, and Conan killed Gods, but thats all semantics based on the authors storyline, the point is that the two, are of the types: barbarian, and ranger. Also, Conans' ability to fight in the dark, would be a skill, as well as Aragon prob could do the same thing, and Aragorn just had skills in Healing, but these things are besides the point. The point is that you could blend the two classes and get something better.

I wasn't even aware that the classes needed fixing. I thought these were considered the most balanced fighting classes in Core Dungeons and Dragons. Whats the deal with this thread?

LOL

What, you don't like Barbarians and Rangers? I'd take a Barbarian or a Ranger in my party over a fighter almost any day of the week and I LIKE fighters.

It's been made apparent to me that raging ability really doesn't make sense. If you look at Conan and Aragorn, the difference between them is initial training based on the cultural moors. Aragorns was trained by elves since his heritage was a noble lineage. Conan was on the opoosite end. Now to what the could do, both tracked, both were formidable combatants, both were stealthy and climbed, there are too many similarities between them if you strip off the personality. They look completely different from the way in which they c\acted. This is culture and upbringing, not abilities or skills.
Fafhrd (of Lankhmar fame) has "berserker" or "northerner" tricks up his sleeve, meaning he sometimes got realled p%#&ed and couldn't be stopped or reasoned with,. This happened in "Lean Times In Lankhmar", and of course, it happened to both heroes in "Ill Met In Lankhmar".

I see no reason to "fix" either class, as both are excellent examples of how I think a class should be built, thought I would probably drop the Ranger's BAB to medium.

Both have a strong niche (the ranger's far broader of course) and different ways of being played. I would keep both of them in any revision of the PHB.

Sorry, dude, I don't think you're going to get much agreement there.

What you house-rule in your own game, of course, is entirely up to you. :)

And isn't that what house rules are for? :D

If nothing else, this thread has opened my eyes to the intriguing possibility of a Barbarian/Ranger mix type class. Not to say that I would ever use it or not use it, just that it's an intriguing possibility.

I get rather amused (and annoyed, there I said it) at the preponderance of these types of "what's wrong with this and that in D&D" threads on EN World. As someone who has typically ranted ad nauseum on other sites (Maxminis, for one) it tends to get rather old after awhile. No disrespect intended to the OP, just my opinion.

I played a Bar/Ran in a two-shot in a friend of mine's game. It was a little beefier than the usual ranger, but still had plenty of skills and was pretty stealthy. (And I could sneak along at the same speed the dwarf walked.)

I was talking with my friend Takasi about this and we came to a realization that what would probably solve the problem would be to stripe the martial weapon abilities and set up 4 prestige classes, Archer, Two weapon fighter, Barbarous fighter and other type weapon user. These would be available at 5th level with specific feat requirements for each based the flavor per se.

Tracking would be available to anyone but at half value or something. Taking one of these prestige classes would give full value for tracking.
