but am not sure how they work...how labor intensive is it...and how time consuming a task....If anyone can let me know the specifics...I'd appreciate it

If you haven't already, the best way to find out is to hop over to the Talking the Talk (OOC - Out Of Character) or Playing the Game (IC - In Character) forums and have a look around.
DM's starting a game and looking for new players will post new game threads (usually with [recruiting] or some such descriptor in the title) threads in the Talking the Talk forum. You may also see recruiting descriptors in established ooc threads where players have dropped out. If you see something you like, post up and express your interest.
Make sure that you keep track of the games you have expressed interest in. It's not necessary to post up a complete character in the first post, but some sort of concept is nice to see. Some GM's allocate slots on the basis of expressions of interest. Personally, I allocate game slots on the basis of essentially completed characters as I have see one too many "Me. Me. Pick me!" posts which are never followed up on.
Once your character is generated, its pbp gaming is fairly undemanding. If you can check in at least 4 - 5 times a week, you should be fine. Ask your dm what sort of frequency they require if you're not sure. Or better still, read some of the ic thread first. And remember, when in doubt, post.
