Would you be satisifed with d20 as your only RPG? [Ties into RyanD's blog entry.]

I haven't seen any threads on this, but I thought this blog entry by RyanD was a really good read. Granted it pertains to me since I fancy myself a game designer, but I think its interesting even if you're just a player.

What I really was curious about was in one of his comments Ryan said that about 80% of the player base isn't concerned with the system at all and they just want to play in a game. I never thought about that before. I've always been content with d20 being my only outlet for roleplaying, but I thought I was the exception and not the norm.

So after all my babbling, the big question is are you satisifed enough with d20 that you never need to play another RPG again? (I would have made this a poll, but I wanted more then a yes or no answer.)

Nope. D20 is far from the best and only RPG experience worth having. I love Traveler (2d6), L5R (d10), Shadowrun (d6 dice pool), HARP, EPICrpg, BESM, and others.

The mechanics along with the rules gives a very different experience for each type of system.

Plus I have enough time on my hands to learn other systems. I'm definitely not a one system only type of RPGer. I am predominantly a "D&D" player, though. Meaning at least half my time during the year is spent playing a fantasy D&D type game.

The answer from me is: "Almost Yes".

The only two RPGs I really would want to play again, and this may be purely for nostalgic reasons, are Amber Diceless RPG and the old Victory games James Bond 007 RPG.

Both of those games have approaches that aren't easily modelled by d20 (although James Bond may be closer).

However, as to other RPG systems, I've really lost interest in new ones. I used to delight in reading new ones, but as I've got older, new systems tend to irritate me more and more. (This is as opposed to board games, which I continue to collect).

Cheers!

Nah. Even back when 1e was the dominant game, I was entralled by the idea that other systems existed. I like the idea that there are many methods to basically accomplish the same thing. Even though I still predominantly like D&D, I have many, many other systems and like it that way. Like they say on RPG.net, I suppose I have gamer ADD.

Yes. D&D is the only game I play. I only play with my kids. I'm perfectly happy. The D&D experiences we share are fun and rich, and there are always new D&D things coming out for us to try. We don't have enough time to fully explore D&D, let alone other RPGs.

Considering I'm at present running a Mekton Zeta campaign, I'd have to say no. To me, its an issue of having the right tool for the job. d20 can certainly do a lot, but there are definitely situations where a different system is far more suited for the particular playstyle. I'd never run a mecha campaign with d20 Mecha, when I could use Mekton, or a cyberpunk game when I could use SR3 (None of this butchered SR4 nonsense here).

Probably not. I like playing Feng Shui and Paranoia. Both games are better served by having different rulesets. The Feng Shui game is all about doing over-the-top stunts like those seen in a Jackie Chan movie. Paranoia is about the players being kept in the dark about the rules as much as possible. Neither would fit into the D20 ruleset particularly well.

That said, I am sure that there are lots of games that would work just fine using D20 as a base ruleset.
