Would You Give Wizards Unlimited Lower Level Spells?

Hmm...

Maybe via some feats.

Prolific Spellcasting, Lesser
Prerequisite: Key ability score 17, Ability to cast 5th level spells
Benefit: Your number of available daily 1st level spells increases to match your spellcaster level. Your number of available daily 2nd level spells increases to your daily number of 1st level spells -5. Your number of available daily 3rd level spells increases to your daily number of 1st level spells -10. If your normal number of daily spells is greater for any spell level, use your normal number of daily spells.

Prolific Spellcasting
Prerequisite: Key ability score 19, Ability to cast 7th level spells, Prolific Spellcasting, Lesser
Benefit: Your number of available daily 1st, 2nd and 3rd level spells increases to match your spellcaster level. Your number of available daily 4th level spells increases to your daily number of 1st level spells -5. Your number of available daily 5th level spells increases to your daily number of 1st level spells -10. Your number of available daily 6th level spells increases to your daily number of 1st level spells -15. If your normal number of daily spells is greater for any spell level, use your normal number of daily spells.

Prolific Spellcasting, Greater

Your number of available daily 7th level spells increases to your daily number of 1st level spells -10. Your number of available daily 8th level spells increases to your daily number of 1st level spells -15. If your normal number of daily spells is greater for any spell level, use your normal number of daily spells.

Reserve Feats don't fix the problem; a fighter doesn't spend feats so he can fight all the time, nor a rogue so he can use skills.

Yes, they should. I'd go one step furter and say all the spell systems should resolve around times per day, just like spell like abilities.

As you increase in level, the number of times a spell can be cast per day increases, from 1/day ultimately finishing at will.

Sure glad there are some ideas floating to power up a high-level wizard. Man, they were just getting the short end of the stick! Completely outclassed by those awesome, Über-überfighters, with their unlimited means of attacking for 16 damage, and always so close up in their opponents' faces; sheesh, those fighters. But we really need a better way to make the wizard class more attractive to players. Ooooo, how about, every time a wizard gains the ability to cast a higher level spell, all lower-level spells can be cast at will! Oh, or, eliminate all XP costs for all spells that require them! Or just give all free metamagic enhancements at will as a free action! 'Cause, we really need to do something to turn those useless 21st level wizards into something worth playing.

Unless you're also limiting the power of spells, the analogy doesn't work. Like others have said, Reserve Feats do the job in a balanced fashion.

Not unlimited, and not if they still get to keep all of their high-level spells as well.

I might allow tradeoffs of some kind, say, based on spell levels, as an Alternative Class Feature instead of a Feat.

(Bear with me, this is just off-the cuff...)

You'd permanently give up a 9th level slot in order to gain 9 spell levels of lesser spell slots, the type and kind determined when you give up the spell, and the election is permenent. So you could give up that 9th level slot in order to gain a 1st level slot and an 8th level slot, or three 3rd level slots or a 4th and 5th level slot, etc. You could only elect to take this ACF when you gain a spell of the level you are giving up. IOW, to exchange your 9th level slot for three 3rd level slots, your PC must have a 9th level spell slot to surrender.

I'd probably even allow this ACF to work in both directions...so a PC could give up three 3rd level slots to gain a 9th level slot.

I've long wanted to try giving wizards unlimited cantrips. I don't feel they need more "power"; I just want them to seem more "magical". Besides, good use of cantrips should be quite intimidating against some opponents. I've always felt the details of how magic works should be a mystery to nigh everyone in the game world except casters. Even a minor working of magic should mark the caster as someone not to trifle with.

Perhaps some cantrips would need to be promoted to 1st level in that case. Perhaps not.
