D&D 5E Would you rebuy all the books if they were updated?

Mearls said that 5e will be a "living" game. Some time next year there will be a survey to gauge the response from playing the new system. Sometime after that, if it's deemed necessary, updates to the rules will be made.

So let's say in about three years time after a few surveys and a few updates, that they decide to do a new print run with all the revisions. It's not technically 5.5e, but it's enough of a change that having a new rulebook would be nice.

Do you think you'll rebuy all the new books? Or will you just stick with something like DungeonScape and assume all the updates will be included in that?

I would do the same as I did with my Pathfinder core rules, which is a first printing:
just mark up the book as I go. No need to replace the book unless it's falling apart.

I might, just possibly, buy a 5.5e.

I won't buy a simple revision, though - if it's not significant enough to be considered a "half edition", it's not significant enough to justify the purchase.

It was annoying enough with 3.0 was updated to 3.5, and when Mutants & Masterminds and d20 Star Wars both went through three editions in just a few years.

I got off that treadmill long ago. I played 3.5 for nearly ten years using the SRD (although I admit that I actually purchased a Monster Manual, just because I like monsters a lot.) It's still an open question whether or not I'll buy 5e at all, but I certainly won't buy it again in a couple of years. In fact, the very suggestion that they might do that strongly disincentivizes me against buying it in the first place.

From what he said in the article, they'll only make revisions if there are significant issues with the rules and enough people bring it up as an issue that needs changing in the surveys. So while they might not call it 5.5e, it may very well be significant enough to be considered as such.

It's a catch-22 for WotC though. Would you prefer that they don't make any changes to the rules even if most people want the changes? That's the purpose of the surveys after all.

I'll have to see what it's like when the time comes. The 3.0-3.5 upgrade was totally worth it; the SWRPG to Star Wars Saga Edition was worth it and then some. Other versions, not so much. There's not enough data to say in this case... so far I haven't encountered any major holes (but I've just started getting into it).
