Other. PCs level up when the players tell me they do.
Love it!

In my 4e game I do XP by the book (including DMG2 rules for XP for time spent in freeform roleplaying). There is no reason to do it this way: if I awarded a level per 4 sessions of play I think it would be practically identical. (And I think this is a deliberate design feature of 4e.) It's just habit (fetishisation?).

I slightly level up XP
because i can only play once per month ! ( but a session is 12 to 14 hours )
If i don't my player's will never see epic campains !

So 1 adventure generaly equal 1 level ...

My players just really like getting XP and totalling it up and getting progressively closer to leveling.

But I've definitely run games where I just tell everyone when it's time to level. I even ran one in 2nd Edition, adjusting everyone's leveling times so it roughly matched the XP chart for their respective classes.

I do like the idea Jeff Carlsenhttp://www.enworld.org/forum/member.php?61749-Jeff-Carlsenmentioned about giving everyone the roleplaying rewards. "Jessica did a really awesome job tonight, so everybody gets 100 extra XP" seems like a reward and, as a side benefit, reduces the sting of other people who may have wanted to move on to combat during that time.

Cheers!

I usually just tell my players when to level up, but I am going to start handing out xp again. I am not going to calculate what they should have from what they have done, but the xp they need for 1/3 of a level for instance. Let's say I want the players to level up every three sessions, I will give out 1/3 of the xp they need for next level each session. This way, they get a feeling for when they will level up.

Running OD&D and XP is largely by the book. Treasure XP is BTB. Encounter XP is awarded for any encounter regardless of the outcome. Fight, Parley/Negotiate, Dupe, etc. all earn full XP for the encounter.
