[YAELHT*] What are you going to do with the ELH?

epic modern supers?

I don't have a d20 modern or d20 chthulhu book, but I bought and read the ELH, and am thinking that we may finally have a workable d20 supers idea. Just combine ELH with PsiHandbook (as modified by Bruce Cordell on his website) and then plunk into some modern setting (or modern with chthulhu) and there you go.

But that is in the long-term. In the short-term, I shall read it and let ideas germinate. But I did snatch the web enhancement to get the epic version of my favourite prestige class, the Holy Liberator.

And I will likely tweak things a bit, here and there (to give the epic illusionist a break from autodisbeliefs from high spot and listen, one person suggested a feat that allowed the illusionist to add her level to the 80DC check. I like that) and may not use Union, but the crunchy bits I like. And the "do-it-yourself" epic spells idea sounds interesting.

I don't own the book, nor have I read it but I'll post anyways.

A player of mine currently at 15th level in a paused campaign in Greyhawk wants to banish Iuz from the material plane by whatever means needed. I originally told him, at 4th level when the player learned of Iuz, not to count on it since I didn't like the idea of Epic god-killing type stuff. He said that was his goal (as an Aasimar Cleric of Heironious in Furyundony which is in eternal war against Iuz) until I killed him off or until he was successful. Well, 11 levels and one year later he was still kicking and the module ended (RttToEE). I guess we'll probably pick it up in the future and set off on fighting the empire of Iuz. Eventually he'll want to challenge Iuz himself. Perfectly fine goal IMHO, If Iuz is on the material plane and there is a road leading up to a castle with a throne then I think he's perfectly justified in wanting to walk up that road until he finds Iuz and then fight him. I like having the Dieities and Demigods book and the Epic Book around as high-level options. Options and rules are never bad in a campaign. Have some wicked campaign plot (I won't bore you with it) which lasts until 25 or so and then maybe challenge Iuz.

If the PC fails then maybe he'll be rewarded with demigodness for being a martyr and he'll get a holy empire next to Iuz's evil empire... Interesting way to end a campaign.

In addition to, of course, having high level PC's...
I'm going to use the idea of Union, but didn't like the execution, so I plan to modify it. I'm going to do a city where all the high-level heroes of the world are sent (to keep them out of trouble elsewhere... you know, to keep them from taking over or killing all the monsters before the lower level populace can get to them)

I plan to have the PC's become part of the police force there. I'm thinking a cross-between Alan Moore's Top Ten and Ankh-Morpork. Could be very interesting.

Re the kvetching about the ELH

Painful as it is to side with both kreynolds, 8th level ass (he's leveled again!), and Psion, elf-lover and self-proclaimed daisy-muncher, you guys are being real d*cks. There are at least one, if not more, threads about the problems with the ELH, or the pros and cons of the ELH. Why not post there? This wasn't supposed to be a debating thread.

Now then . . . I have to say that overall, I agree with a lot of the complaints about the ELH, BUT I also see some tasty, tasty morsels. And I'm running a 7th level campaign right now!

Why am I happy about the ELH? One word: PARAGONS. I love 'em! The party right now couldn't defeat a Paragon Small Centipede, but that's not the point. The point is that they just saw a Paragon (medium spider), and the party bard recognized it for what it was. (Luckily, the party didn't disturb it, and got away . . . the spider was otherwise occupied with a couple of ettins.)

And lord, is knowledge of where it is worth something. Imagine how much the drow would love to get their hands on such a spider. Imagine what Paragon Blood must be worth to potion brewers or those that make magic items, re power components. Imagine how much someone might pay . . . or, on the more pessimistic side, the lengths to which someone might go to locate such a creature!

In Other News, there's a legend in my campaign about how someday, a Humanoid that is greater than all others will rise to unite the people of the Underdark against the Drow below and the Elves above. At least, *now* there's a legend. I am wondering what it would be like if the party was asked to babysit, in some fashion, a five-year old "Chosen" Paragon Goblin who was supposedly destined to save the entire of the Underdark from the rampages of the elves.

The point is, the ELH is givin' me ideas. This is a good thing.

Hi Psion mate! :)

Ah... that brings back memories. It might interest you to know that our first GM put the Celestials and the Destroyer in our first game. My 3rd character became part of the Destroyer for a bit...

The Celestials and the Destroyer wouldn't look out of place in our current campaign! ;)

One of the best stories is Thor vs. the Celestials...he actually manages to penetrate the armour of the 10,000 ft. tall Exitar and jumps in only to find himself in some sort of cross between a dimensional nexus and an alien bioverse...suffice to say it all goes downhill for the Thunder God after that! :p

I am using the book as we speak, over in the Rokugan IR in the IN Character Forum. It gave me some ideas about spells, specifically I really like the epic spells. If anyone really thinks they are too powerful, they should try working a character up to the god-damn level you have to be in order to throw that kind of firepower.

Also, I like some of the epic creatures that give you that feeling that you can use them around level 1 PCs because the beast/aberation/whatever is just too damn powerful to even notice you on it's radar. Do the players notice the moths, even if you mention them?

I can't wait to use a devastation vermin just rooting up a gargantuan Treant...

Chatdemon ...

Please stop going out of your way to piss in peoples' cornflakes. It is rude. And yes, that means I am telling you differently. You can have a different opinion, but it doesn't mean you get to be a jerk about it, or be commended (or defended) for wading into a thread that was talking about what people who are buying the book plan to do it, and talking smack.

Booyah, you hate it. So freaking what? This isn't the thread for proud proclimations of how much it sucks. This was a thread started to discuss how the game would be used by people buying it, not to rag on it. There are other ragging threads. Take it there.

Heh... I don't think it was near as cool as the scion/paragon "template" in the 2e PO HLC book. But still, it serves a purpose. :)

Awesome link U_K! I've been looking for a good Marvel Universe type site like that. Thanks! Got any more?

It would have been better if the author had been introduced to "paragraph structure." :)
