(YBA) Rules Question

Ciaran

First Post
I've checked the rules, and there doesn't seem to be any rule concerning running away from combat. And as my character is about to be slaughtered, I'm rather interested in finding some way to escape. :-) How is escape from combat handled in YBA?

ok eric.....you should have just asked me.... when you want to run... you gen a move as your run action... if you win the round..you run... if you are defated... you get cought up to... if you have a Dirty Trick when you are able to buy skills... if you DT you get a auto run success......

I've been following that adventure, and since this thread is convieniently here, I thought I'd bring up something.

Monsters ALWAYS die when reduced to 0 hits (unless the fighter specifically strikes to subdue, as Moth did)... characters only die if they take a hit for more than 1 point during the battle, and then are reduced to 0.

Hey Rathan, I didn't mean to offend; I put up the question publicly because, since it's an important point not covered in the rules, other players might also want to know the answer.

I assume that if you attempt to run and fail, the opponent also inflicts damage as normal?

I think that is up to the dm...... I would say if he cought you....he'd hit you to stop you...... but I think it could be played either way.......

Couple of minor things I feel compelled to point out.

If you make an attempt to run and you lose the attack you still escape you just take damage in the doing so. (A given DM is free to adjust this if so they desire).

A monster/NPC usually dies whenever its reduced to 0 hp unless the PC specifically strikes to subdue. But a DM is free to require the player means of death (ie 2 damage from 1 hit and reduced to 0 hp) for NPCs he deems should have this feature, eg an NPC with a magic item or a head villain or similar.

Adding to what Kalanyr said,

The Run Away rule is not a part of the official rules and is completely optional at this point. I created it for Wicht's Lair and others have adopted it as well. Kalanyr is correct in how it works. If the Judge allows it, you may run away from any fight, but must do 1 generated attack as normal. If you fail the attack you run away but still take damage. If you succeed in the attack you deal no damage but get away without further injury. Since the rule is optional, this may be adjusted but the judge and player should agree to how it will generally work beforehand.

I also adjusted the rules for Wicht's Lair to have certain NPCs operate as PCs. These NPCs can acquire loot from defeating or bargaining with PCs and can furthermore only be killed if they recieve a single attack worth more than 2 hits. I have, as a rule, given such PCs the Epic Power: Fated. I did however, mention this as being true from the outset of the dungeon.

Thanks for all the helpful responses!

On a different note, a question for all you YBA DMs: to what degree do you plan out your adventures ahead of time, and to what degree do you make them up as you go along? Do you draw maps of countries and dungeons, or do you just describe things as you go along and hope for the best?

Another rules question:

The "Dirty Trick" power says you can't take it if you are a Holy Warrior. However, it doesn't specify whether you can learn Dirty Trick first, then take Holy Warrior. Which way does it work?
