D&D 5E Your Biggest Gaming Pet Peeve

My biggest pet peeve was the "Wealth by Level" concept of 3e and (from what I understand) 4e. Having a prescribed track of what I'm supposed to hand out as a DM grated my nerves, and one of my favorite parts of 5e is the removal of that whole concept.

I'm with you. Not because it can't be handy to have a guide when creating characters above 1st, but because treasure was a stealth part of your character advancement and the math assumed you'd be updating you bonus to attack/damage, saves, AC as well as getting other items to help you be more effective. The difference in effectiveness between a level 15 character and a level 15 character with items was very significant.

My current pet peeve is: talking out of turn. Once in a while, you might have something truly interesting or funny to say on another player's turn. But in general, just shut the hell up and let the game proceed. You'll get your turn in the spotlight in due time. That's why we take turns.

If my players all have backgrounds where their parents tragically died (quite common, alas) how can I tragically kill their parents during play?

Scry and die.

Maybe I should write a background where my character had loving and supportive parents, who encouraged the character in all aspects of their life and fully backed their child's decision to become a hobo.

People with too many niggling pet peeves. And I'm not just saying that to stir the pot. If I'm having to spend too much time during or after a session mediating a bunch of nonsense I'll kindly show you the door. Serious issues can arise and I'll likewise take those seriously, but if Jim doesn't like how Ken roleplays his character or if Sam doesn't like how Sally rolls her dice... people are going to find themselves out on their duff. It's a game. We're all here to have fun and taking it all a little too seriously can be a problem in and of itself. Relax or help yourself to someone else's table.
