D&D 5E Zhentarim flying snakes

Cool! Thanks. Couldn't find any mention of the Zhents using flying snakes from earlier editions online. 'Tis a pity the Zhents never got their own 2e sourcebook, like the Harpers and the Cult of the Dragon did.

This is the earliest entry I can find in my books (2e Monster Manual), haven't searched dragon magazine archive yet.

Calisham and the Shining South, no mention of Zhents.

Must be a dragon mag or an adventure, will continue researching as time permits.

I was totally bummed when I realized the CR for a flying snake was just a notch too high for me to get one as a wizard's familiar...

In the great upheaval for Storm Kings Thunder there is a Zhent that has a flying snake as a familiar or pet.

I didn't see a challenge rating requirement for the find familiar spell.

Playing through it now, there was a woman in Nightstone who had a flying snake. Maybe I'll have to go back to talk to her again ^^

Maybe not a CR limit, but they do list specific animals that are ok:

bat, cat, crab, frog (toad), hawk, lizard, octopus, owl, poisonous snake, fish (quipper), rat, raven, sea horse, spider, or weasel.

Anything other than that (unless you're a warlock of course) would be up to your DM.
