Resistance breaking down... I'll see if I can make some sense out of the system from the SRD.

I'm looking at Smart/Dedicated, definitely a nerd (very much against her parents' desires), headed towards either the mage or psychic role. Her 'background event' is likely to be ongoing/repetitive (and part of the reason she isn't in private school- but she is SO going to Harvard, okay?).

Will look further...

First, hooray and welcome pathfinderq1 ! :D

Second, the game being about high school and monsters - oh it will be. ;) You guys are just giving me a lot more to work with, which is awesome. :D

So, just how common and/or 'known' are monsters/magic, etc.? Buffy-level 'secret/hidden knowledge? Do police and/or the FBI have dedicated supernatural resources?

Rumor, legend, and speculation for 99% of the population. People don't see what they don't want to see. There are a few Mulder types in local and federal law enforcement who try to uncover the truth, but they aren't taken seriously.

Okay, so it feels like the backstory is coming together really well.

Lets get some mechanics hammered out, if we can?

So I'm looking at building a melee focused combat character...either Strong/Tough or Strong/Fast, with a lot of emphasis on Strong. Shadow Slayer or Battle Mind. Kind of leaning towards Shadow Slayer at the moment.

I kind of like the idea of doing unarmed combat, but I'm not sure how viable that is, and Shadow Slayer requires Archaic Weapons Proficiency...which is kind of hard to justify on a modern-era character...but I'll figure something out. :) Maybe we could work something out where an unarmed combat feat like Brawling or one of the martial arts feats could substitute for Archaic Weapons?

Archaic Weapons Proficiency will definitely come up during the course of the story so, perfectly justifiable to take it at a later level. And, kinda needed for some critters (fists can't stake or decapitate a vampire, for example). ;)

So, if Shayuri wants to go with Shadow Slayer, I'll throw in for the 'Potential Psychic' role- Creative; Dedicated/Charismatic; Telepath

If Shayuri wants to go with Battlemind, I'll go with a 'mundane' student- Athlete; Fast/Smart; (possible future Investigator, Field Scientist, etc.- she wants to grow up to be Scully).

In both cases, the character would be the daughter of a (dead/damaged/disappeared) federal agent (Mulder-type) and a research scientist (a very 'real world' centered woman, now employed at the Draper Labs); the character would have inherited her father's notebooks, and be very interested in paranormal phenomena. The telepath character idea is the much 'nicer', nerdier, and more supportive of the two, the mundane is more 'focused' and harder-edged; not sure if she would focus on melee or ranged tactics...

Alright, if you're interested in psychic, I'll commit to the Shadow Slayer.

My interest in Battlemind was mostly just 'how high can I crank a Defense rating' anyway. :)
