Burnt Offerings

At Ravi's suggestion that cultural differences between peoples be accepted and honored, the Korvosan steel merchant turns white with apoplectic rage. The man tries to retort, but in his fury instead snorts. Eyeing first Rainier then Ravi with anger, the merchant spits green phlegm on the nearest of the standing stones then turns on his booted heel and wheels out of the courtyard toward the sanctuary, clearly making ready to depart. The other two tour customers, a middle-aged merchant's wife of no relation to the steel vendor and her daughter pale at the argument and shrink away from the group, clearly at a loss as to what to say.

Shayliss smiles in welcome at Gron as he returns with meat and drink. The girl doesn't touch the dove but takes a quick draught off the tankard of ale, downing half the cup's contents at once. Gron's comment regarding the free food and ale pass over the girl's carefree head. Picking idly at a roasted chestnut on a platter, Shayliss listens with wide doe eyes to Gron's tale of danger. "Have you ever killed anyone?" The girl eagerly leans forward to listen to more of Gron's tales, the bodice of her festival dress perching its creamy wares on the wooden-planked buffet.

"Hmph," Gron grunts, taking a swig of festival ale. "There is no pride in killing," he continues. "Not even in killing those that deserve it. Not even in killing goblins."

He looks down at the belt of skulls. "See those? Goblin skulls. Collected them all myself? You asked earlier if I bought this belt. I suppose I did, in a sense. Paid for them with little pieces of my soul."

Gron laughs. "Why should your pretty little head be troubled with such things? After all, you have other matters to deal with. You're becoming a young woman. Your concerns should be in your future, what you will become... who you will marry... where you will live."

"I suspect your mother will find a place for you, for better or for worse."

"Being groomed to join my mother?" Shayliss smiles at Gron. Looking up at the young man through silky black eyelashes, Shayliss shakes her head no. "That job'll likely fall like a ripe plum to whomever father agrees I can marry. Or to whichever husband Katrine selects."

Gron finishes off his plate of roast dove. "These arrangements are so against nature," he says. "I have spent much time in the natural world. Much simpler than the machinery of our society. Your family would choose a destiny for you. That's no way to live."

"You know, the time we have spent together is short, but I am somehow refreshed whenever we meet. You have some sort of... effect on me, fair lass. Perhaps I'm not the feral beast I seem to think I am. But don't tell anyone." He laughs.

"There is much left in this day, Shayliss," Gron continues. "Would you like to join me in a brief walk in the woods? All of this revelry is giving me a bit of a headache. The fresh air would probably do the both of us a world of good."

Rainier slowly looks up from the impudent merchant's spittle and affixes Ravi with an icy glare.

"You may be no different from a savage, but never presume to say such of me. And I say that our world is superior from atop the mountaintop of history, with the barbarism of the ages stretched out around us, in a single bloody battlefield. If you believe that light and reason and civilization are the equal to barbarism, madness and treachery ... well, now you have two reasons to hold your tongue, priest."

And with that, Rainier stalks away from the group, to worship in solitude.

After eating and drinking his fill, and then quite a bit more, Penn sits back and takes in the surroundings. Watching the people mill back and forth, enjoying themselves with dancing, laughing and, of course, eating puts him totally at ease. So much so that he finds himself almost nodding off at one point. Jolting himself wide awake he stands up and has a bit of a stretch.

Feeling his rather light coin purse at his side, he remembers again that he is down to his last few coin (again!). That was the main reason why he had come down to the festival in the first place. The food and drink were very nice but he was here to see if there was anywhere he might be able to earn a little bit of coin for himself. Penn was hoping that with everyone being in such a good mood due to the festival, things might be a little easier for him.

Spotting a gnome through the crowd, he trundles over to see if his fellow little 'un knew of any place where someone of his size might come in handy.

"If not, I guess it's back to 'performing'," Penn thought to himself as he walked over to where the Gnome was sitting.

"Good day, to you there good fellow," said Penn with a smile.

"Beautiful day, isn't it. I noticed that you and I seem to be the odd men out, so to speak. I thought I might come over and introduce myself and see if you wanted some company. You look reasonably well travelled. Where are you from?"

" Hmmph? " mumbles Phythas in surprise, turning to Penn with a mouth still full of food. He takes a moment to swallow, then wipes his mouth with his sleeve before answering.

" Oh, hello there, " he says, returning Penn's smile. " I wouldn't mind a little company, thank you very much. The name is Phythas, of Whistledown, previously of the Sanos Forest, but lately of the open road. "

Extending a hand in greeting, he adds, " I don't think you gave me your name, good sir. Maybe you could tell me a little about yourself. "

"As you sa-sa-say, sir," Ravi says quietly, watching the two men leave. He moves over to the stone, pulls a handkerchief from his pocket, and begins to clean it.

After a few moments, he glances over at the woman and her daughter and bows his head. "I am very sorry a-a-a-about that, ma'am and m-m-miss." Attempting to make light of the situation, Ravi smiles slightly, and says, "These things happen w-w-when there is free ale to be had. If you would like to stay and p-p-pray, you are welcome to, or I c-c-could accompany you out, if you'd prefer to return to the f-f-festival."

"Penn Bedrangle is my name," Penn replies, shaking Phythas hand warmly.

"You want to know a bit about myself, huh? Mmmmmmm......where should I start?" says Penn, taking a seat next to the Gnome.

"I'm a bit of a wanderer, like yourself I guess. I've only been in Sandpoint a few weeks now. I've been a bit of a nomad in my time."

Penn then spends the next few hours (or however long he can bear to listen! :D ) about his life and how he had come to where he is today, including some stories that involve him "bending" more than a few laws.

"I'm trying to stay away from that sort of thing now though. I'm a little short on funds at them moment though. Do you know of anywhere around here that a person like myself might be able to earn a gold or two? Surely there's someplace or someone around here that could use what I have to offer," he says, sitting up straight and puffing out his chest.

Inside the Sandpoint cathedral, the merchant's wife and her daughter recover their wits after nearly witnessing fisticuffs in the courtyard between the Korvosan steel merchant, Ravi, and Rainier. The woman nods at Ravi's invitation to stay and pray and escorts her daughter back into the sanctuary where the pair sit in humbled silence for the better part of an hour. When the mother and daughter get up to leave, the woman makes a point to seek out Ravi and deposit a silver half-mark into the priest's palm. "For your trouble this day, good sir." With her gaze prudently lowered, the merchant's wife discreetly bobs a courtesy to Ravi then the pair quits the sanctuary in favor of returning to the festival. The large set of double stone doors in the narthex open to re-admit the tourists to the party outside, the sun and noise a garish intrusion against the cool and quiet interior of the sanctuary.

Outside, at one of the wooden bench picnic tables in the church square, Shayliss continues to intently listen to Gron's tale. The girl pales at Gron's description of earning the goblin skulls adorning his belt and is very obviously simultaneously disturbed and fascinated by Gron's story. At Gron's somewhat lighter suggestion that arranged marriages are against the will of nature, Shayliss noticeably perks and vigorously nods her head in agreement. "Katrine would not argue with you. She's dead set on one of the millers but father won't hear of it. Watches her like a hunting hawk does a mouse, he does. I'm hoping that when love finds me, it'll go easier with father." Sizing up the set of Gron's shoulders and the quality of his chest, Shayliss cocks her head to the side and smiles but declines Gron's invitation for a walk in the woods, saying that it's high time she returned to her family's merchant stall set up especially for the day down in the town's lower tier, nearer the docks. "Come and have a gander, see if there's anything that catches your fancy." The girl winks knowingly at Gron then takes her leave.

Penn and Phythas fall to storyswapping and while away the afternoon without leaving the church square. At random intervals, their banter is punctuated by a serving girl offering a platter of bread, meat, or pastry, and by the inevitable tankard of free ale that so copiously flows in Sandpoint this day.

The day flows forward, the sun warming the afternoon air with thick golden motes of light that soon enough resonate soupily at the day draws to a close. At the advent of evening, the day's stiff trade winds die down and the air becomes humid, hot with the perspiration of so many bodies in tight quarters. Just before sundown, Father Zantus returns to the wooden podium along with Mayor Deverin and Sheriff Hemlock for the official consecration of the new cathedral. A large covered wagon accompanied by a pair of robed acolytes is wheeled into the square. A sharp retort, like the crack of distant thunder, slices through the excited crowd as the sun's setting rays paint the western sky. A stray dog that has crawled under a nearby wagon to sleep starts awake, and the buzz of two donzen conversations quickly hushes as all heads turn toward the central podium, where a beaming Father Zantus has taken stance. Father Zantus clears his throat, takes a breath to speak but is suddenly silenced by a woman's scream slicing through the air. A moment later, another scream rises, then another. Beyond them, a sudden surge of strange new voices rises--high-pitched, tittering shrieks that sound not quite human. The crowd parts and something low to the ground races by, giggling with disturbing glee as the stray dog gives a pained yelp and then collapses with a gurgle, its throat cut open from ear to ear. As blood pools around the dog's head, the raucus sound of a strange song begins, chanted from shrill, scratchy voices.

[sblock=Gron, Phythas]Gron and Phythas are familiar with the Goblin tongue and their keen ears enable them to hear the following tidbit of a goblin song:

"Goblins chew and goblins bite.
Goblins cut and goblins fight.
Stab the dog and cut the horse,
Goblins eat and take by force!"
[/sblock]

[sblock=Ravi, Rainier]Ravi and Rainer spot the shape racing by that killed the dog and recognize the beast as a goblin. The goblin now hides at the edge of the canvas-covered wagon--a single goblin, licking the blood from its dogslicer as it looks excitedly at the crowd, obviously seeking a new target.[/sblock]

Ravi and Rainier made their spot check and get an action for the surprise round.

Sorry, no love for Penn on either the spot or the listen check.

Upon hearing the song, which Gron knows all too well, the hunter draws an arrow and readies his bow, looking around for any sign of goblins. Gron seeks cover from which to fire upon the little bastards, setting up shop there, waiting for a target to emerge.

"Niha alaan alsak tuunan..."*

* "Come out, come out, wherever you are...", translated from the Goblin tongue.

[sblock=Gron Vandail, Round 1]
Gron readies an action to fire upon the first Goblin he sees. If there's any cover within a move action, Gron goes there first, then readies.

Add +1 to hit and damage to the following if the target is within 30ft (Point Blank Shot).
1. Readied action - Longbow: 1d20+4=20
2. Damage: 1d8+2=3 LOL minimum damage :\ [/sblock]

"G-g-g-go-go--!" Ravi stammers, but he cannot seem to get the word out. Still trying to force the word past his lips, he fumbles for the crossbow stored in his backpack, which he has kept loaded in case he needs to use it quickly to defend himself or others--now, for instance. He tears the weapon out of the pack, from beneath a half-dozen books, and clutches it with shaking hands. Goblin... goblins... in Sandpoint! Oh, gods, why today!?

[sblock=Ravi, surprise round]Ravi simply retrieves his stored crossbow as his surprise round action.[/sblock]

If there's a goblin nearby and still standing after the battle has begun, Ravi tries to steady his shaking hands, moves to be sure that no one stands between him and the goblin, and pulls the trigger.

[sblock=Ravi, round 1]Since everyone else was doing it, figured I might as well! Attacking with the crossbow: +1 attack, 1d8 damage, 19-20/x2 critical, 80' range.[/sblock]
