Day 268: The King's Soldiers

Vittero comments to Raven Elk, "My father has seemed a bit concerned of late. I get the impression that the new Divine Praetor has taken a position of power that has directly influencing or perhaps interfering with that of the King. According to him, the King is a reserved and fair man, despite being fairly young."

It is really no matter of tracking. A blind man could almost follow the trail, especially since the quarry has traveled down the regular path between the small Windward Village to Thisidaboga. The villagers are mostly distraught and make little coherent conversation, but all agree that the soldiers have only recently departed and that a priest was in charge, though the soldiers did the killing.

By early evening the crew has caught up with the squad of soldiers. They are preparing a camp directly in the middle of the path. The soldiers move about and make preparation directly under the command of the priest. Oddly enough, the priest still wears a mask covering his face. The camp is a good 200 paces ahead. The soldiers are intent on their task. None have noticed the party so far distant at their rear. At this distance, it is difficult to determine enough specific details about the squad or the priest.

Maka will approach from the opposite side as Taylar, using stealth to slowly get close enough to the camp to gather intel. Maka makes as little noise as possible, and stays low to the ground. He approaches upwind, if possible. His intention is to count troop numbers, armament, and placement. He also takes note of which tent belongs to the priest, hopefully watching for long enough to see the priest take his mask off.
OOC: Stealth roll: 83 (mulligan; should have been 38.)

GM: NOTE:
I change "upwind" to downwind in my use of your post, since this is what you would have meant. Upwind would betray your scent to your quarry. Downwind would carry it away.

This active task represents watching and listening to the immediate area to determine patterns, anomalies, or dangers. It can also be used to determine a person's intentions or motivation. While animals tend to be motivated by fear, hunger, or preservation, people are more complicated and can be driven by greed, jealously, avarice, etc. This task may be countered by Blend, Skepticism, or Stealth, whichever is most appropriate to the situation. These tasks are not cumulative.
Check: effectiveness + Empathy (Collegiate) + d100
Raven Elk: 24 + 24 + 50 = 98[/sblock]
The designated path is about 2 paces wide and mostly straight between the party and the soldiers. The forest of the area is comprised of conifers from gigantic to huge. The trees become smaller the further inland and southward one travels. Due to the extensive coverage of the overhead canopy and the fallen needles upon the ground, little to no undergrowth exists and what does is comprised of small shrubs, groundcover, and vines. The enormous size of the trees, however could hide three people standing shoulder to shoulder. Some are larger. Some are smaller. The ground is mostly level between the Windward Village and the Outpost or Thisidaboga, but is dotted by random boulders and rocky breaks.

The soldiers appear to all be actively preparing the campsite while the priest gives command. The soldiers are all attired in batting armor, which is heavily woven wool. They are equipped with small wooden shields and metal short swords. The forearms of their armor are reinforced with rods of metal, as well. The equipment of the group is being carried upon donkeys and is currently being unpacked. There are only two tents being cast, a larger one for the priest and a smaller one for two females.

There are 10 soldiers in total, two of which are beginning to prepare a cookfire. The priest never removes the cloth that hides his face. He gestures and makes some command to the two females, who immediately depart the camp, perpendicular to the trail. Their circumnavigation will first put them on a path the near Maka and Adisakti. The females are dressed in batting armor that has been made for them and dyed a dark blue. They are each armed with two fighting knives which are currently sheathed and shortbows. The bows are at ready with an arrow knocked.

The priest is wearing a silk, white robe, adorned with a black surcoat emblazoned with a symbol of the sun upon its front and back. The garment is loose and billowy, flowing to his ankles. His feet are clad in boots.

Taylar sneaks as close as he dares and watches the camp, soldiers, and priest.
Vittero follows Taylar while Adisakti accompanies Maka. Vittero's bow is still ready with an arrow knocked, as it always is during wilderness travel. Vittero darkens the area around him as he sneaks off with Taylar.

This active task is applied when attempting to obscure oneself from view or to dampen and, ultimately prevent sound while moving. This may be augmented by various active or passive Collegiate Tasks.
Check: effectiveness + various Collegiate tasks + d100
Taylar: 22 + 18(inversion) + 50 = 90
Vittero: 23 + 22(inversion) + 47(darken) + 88 = 180
Maka: 27 + 19(inversion) + 83 = 129
Adisakti: 21 + 15(inversion) + 36(darken) + 88 = 160[/sblock]
GM: Taylar and Vittero take the right flank and close to about 20 paces of the encampment. They count 10 regular soldiers, who are all male. They can hear the voice of the priest, who is male and speaking Thisidan. They see the two spies move away from the camp in the opposite direction from their position and note that they are female. The soldiers speak and joke with one another and seem to be enjoying themselves on their bloody mission. The females make no sound. The priest only speaks commands and does not seem to be the least bit friendly, but he does not curtail any of the men in their jovial behavior.

Maka will approach from the opposite side as Taylar, using stealth to slowly get close enough to the camp to gather intel. Maka makes as little noise as possible, and stays low to the ground. He approaches downwind, if possible. His intention is to count troop numbers, armament, and placement. Adisakti readies a javelin in his right hand, switching his spear to his left. He bends light to darken his appearance as he goes with Maka.
GM: Maka and Adisakti move within 20 paces of the left flank of the encampment. The note that the priest's tent is being erected in the center of the path, forward of the march. The cookfire is being prepared, safely, in the center of the road and the center of the march. The soldiers make places for themselves along the edge of the path, having woolen blankets but no cover or bedding. Maka and Adisakti see that the two female sentries will pass about 5 paces in front of their location. They figure that there is a possibility of being noticed. The two women seem rather attentive.

Day 268: Plans of Action

It has become late in the afternoon, pushing into evening. The shadows are long upon the ground, where they are distinguishable from the overall demur lighting from the overhead canopy. The steady breeze from the west brings the scent of cedar and pine to Taylar, Vittero, and Raven Elk. Maka and Adisakti get a hint of smoke and roasting game. The soldiers preparing camp appear nearly oblivious to the forest, but the priest is wary. He watches the soldiers and the forest.
Raven Elk decides to take the middle, along the path, but just to the left so as to have his spear, in his right hand, ready for battle. He will use the trees for shielding and cover from spies or guards.
GM: Raven Elk is able to easily near within 5 paces of the encampment. The soldiers give no heed to the direction from which they came. All of them occasionally watch the priest, more in suspicion than for guidance. They all periodically take to grumbling and make overt noise with metal cups, as if careless or nonchalant.

Maka keeps a close eye on the women scouts; he will attempt to remain still and hidden, but he is watching them for any sign of danger recognition. If they sense his presence at any point, he will attack with his bow.
OOC: If needed: Reaction roll: 76; Attack roll: 80. (Both natural.)
Adi quiety slips away from Maka to the right, wanting to put some distance between them. In case one or the other is noticed, it might help hide the other.
GM: The two women pass within 10 paces of Maka and Adisakti, but as they continue to walk, it appears the two hidden men were not noticed. The two women appear to be en route to make a circuit of the camp at about 10 paces distant from it. Their path of travel will take them into conflict with Raven Elk.

Seeing the conifer forest around them, Taylar quickly looks for any pine material that will aid in making a fire. He whispers to Vittero, "If we can set those tents on fire, it could provide us with a useful distraction."
Vittero nods. He picks up two random pine cones and tosses one to Taylar. "We should be able to ignite these at the same time we throw them at the tent."
GM: It appears that the two could readily torch the priest's tent, as it is more on the near side of the path, but it would be too risky to try to reach the tent for the spies.

GM: Two flaming pine cones sail through the air, landing on the pitched roof of the priest's tent and rolling to the ground. Within a couple of seconds the cones ignite the edges of the canvass tent, and flames begin to climb its side. The priest claps his hands and the soldiers immediately cease their idle behavior and ready themselves for battle.

The priest looks directly into the forest in the direction of Taylar and Vittero, his eyes coming to a stop when he makes direct eye contact with Taylar. The priest takes a deep breath and raises his left hand. When he does so, the flame upon his tent is extinguished. He begins to bark commands at his soldiers.

Hearing the rise in commotion, the two women abandon their circuit and make directly toward the road, which still puts them on an imminent conflict with Raven Elk, since his move. Raven Elk, from his vantage point, sees the two flames fly from the forest toward the tent. He knows it to be the cause of Taylar and Vittero, since they traveled in that direction. He also hears the sound of running feet coming from his left.

Raven Elk turns to look in the direction of the running sound and sees the two warrioresses. He can tell that these two are quick, so as he readies himself for battle, he calls upon Way to give him combat reflexes to dodge, parry and strike with elan and fleetness.
